How the fuck did I miss that.

We get their fruity lambic stuff like the kriek and apricot. It is like 25 bones a bottle. Their website has an order form where you can get them delivered to your door for about the same price. $22 for vlad/bourbonic and $16 for the fruited lambics

ofc they don't ship to PA... PAGING DAN

I guess this poop is mainly directed at Dan and Gary or anyone else somewhat interested in beer and willing to stop by my place.

I'm thinking sometime close to thanksgiving I will have another beer tasting. Only instead of it being a completely random free for all, it is going to be with a theme. All beers must be of the imperial stout sort and have been aged in a barrel.

These are the beers I have been thinking about including and will secure more between now and then.

Voodoo brewery - Big black voodoo daddy
Great Divide - Oak aged Yeti
Founders - KBS
Firestone walker - Parabola
Weyerbacher - Heresy
Port brewing - old viscosity
Goose island - bourbon county stout

(unreleased so far but will be shortly, barrel aged stormking from victory)

there are a couple others I have in mind but it might be tricky/expensive to get them. I guess it all depends on level of interest.

Here is the kicker though. It will be a blind tasting. Meaning my wife will be pouring all the beer and we will have no idea what is in the glass when we are drinking them. The idea here is to see if we generally agree on which one is the best/worst without being fully aware of what is in the glass.
Will the firestone or KBS be supreme above all others as we might expect based on beer advocate reviews? Who knows, let's see.

seems like a good question to me, this is what i found on the matter:

http://www.beertown.org/books/farmhouse.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saison

seems to me they started in belgium/france as a type of beer produced in farmhouses as opposed to being done in a commercial way
pale ales it seems

Saison is a light/pale version of a Belgian ale. It can range from nearly flavorless to heavily spiced. The flavor of the brew primarily comes from the yeast and the higher than usual fermenting temperatures. Traditionally they were open fermented in warm houses or
farms/barns. They have (in a traditional aspect) a sort of barnyard light musty character.

The most widely distributed standard/original example of the style is saison dupont.
Hennepin (yes the beer Seth loves) is a strong version of the style made in new York by a Belgian funded and owned brewery that uses traditional methods
my local brewery just brewed one and completely exagerates the spicy side of the style by adding a fuckton of spices to theirs

it is a very forgettable style of beer, clearly all that exciting. About the only time of the year that I get thirsty for one is in the summer. I have one or two and I'm set till next year

Saison dupont is awesome. I love the funky yeastness of all belgian beers. I always try new ones when I see them, but to each their own

if they are geater than 6% abv clearly at all, they develope with age
i would shy away from those which have less than 6% alcohol though if you are questioning their freshness

I love the fresh harvest beers, the first time I got one was right off of the first shipment to the east coast at a beer warehouse/store. I opened it for the ride home (I wasn't driving, duh) and went back in to buy more after one sip. Reasonably priced for the quality too, usually $3-4 for the fat bombers.

Went to my favorite beer and pizza place last night, the owner had ordered a log (5 gallons) of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale and asked us when we were coming down this week so he could open it. When we got there he told us that they had sent the wrong keg, so he had five gallons of Jack and Ken's 30th anniversary black barleywine - certainly worth keeping. I love the stuff but I only had one pint before moving onto something <10%ABV.

Only 7 cases of the hemisphere and estate ale made it to the main central PA distributor. They are asking like 90 bucks for the cases which puts them at 7.50 a bottle by the case or $10 per in the bottle shops. That pisses me off. I snagged some of these last year for like 3 bucks

the black bw is pretty good. My bet is that the 4th and final installment of the anniversary ale is going to be the best. It's a blend of oak aged Bigfoot barleywine, celebration ale and something else

The only other "black barleywine" I can think of that is labeled and advertised as that is founders 2010 nemesis.
Appalchian brewing company's barleywine has always been black. Long before other breweries started identifying theirs as pale or black, English or American. It's very similar to stout but with more pronounced fruity esters and abv content

The hemisphere ones were below $5 here last year, the estate ones were in the $8 range.

Have you ever stumbled upon firestone walker's anniversary ales?
I think #14 is coming out here shortly if it hasnt been released already. The folks at my tasting last night were talking about the 12th anniversary being pretty ofc
