I was thinking that I had to be able to boil the water in the mash tun :donno: I am going to consult with the brew crew on this and figure out if they want to go to all-grain on the group efforts right now.

Negative, mashing is just soaking the sugars out of the grain and that can take place in any container so long as it can withstand upwards of 180 degree water. Using something like a keg gives you the added security that if the temps are too low you can turn on a burner to bring them up.

excellent, I may just need to borrow some welding gear from a friend...

If you are looking to cut the top off a keg use a grinder clearly a welder... Unless you use a plasma welder you will create nothing but a burnt mess

Will do my best. If I pass along a bottle of stout it needs some bottle conditioning as it was bottled today.

currently in the process of my third day of brewing in a row

Saturday- 10 gallons of a belgian single (5 gallons goes to a collaboration effort that is going to be aged for a year in an oak barrel that was previously used for a wild ale by the bullfrog brewery, the other 5 gallons i put wild ale dregs and belgian yeast into, im going to mimic the barrel aging by putting in oak cubes)

Sunday- let bryan brew 5 gallons of a triple ipa on my system, used the second runnings of the wort to brew up a session ale that will eventually be a sour/brett'd porter

Monday- 5 gallons of oatmeal stout that is going to be broken down and individually aged in 1 gallon batches with varied amounts of licorice, coffee and vanilla beans

@Gary

Super GZ news for the state of MD
http://beerinbaltimore.com/?p=5365

Firestone Walker coming to town in a couple weeks. The velvet Merlin (oatmeal stout will most likely make an appearance since it's a year round brew) but "special" things like parabola, abacus and their anniversary beers would be VN1 buys if you come across them.

Speaking of which.

@Joe
Do you know of this Firestone abacus? Since you were able to score parabola and FW 14, do you think abacus is do-able when it cones out in a few or is that a Portland exclusive?

i havnt looked into it, but realistically belmont gets whatever they want. and things like fw14 they had cases sitting out, so no douchbaggery in crowd shit. i dont know how much abacus will be around though. im sure the portland crowd will be pooping about it if it is available.

It's been over a year since i read anything about it but I believe abacus is the same story as parabola was. Very limited production that was draft only. People flipped shit and loved it so much that they made another batch to have some bottled and distributed.
- Parabola (they did this and are going to release bottled batch 2 soon I think)
- Abacus (was previously draft only and when it comes out will be the first time it was ever bottled)

Yesterday I saw abacus is going to be served at the extreme Brewfest on march 11/12 which is what prompted my memory into realizing holy shit the bottles should be coming out soon if they have draft to serve

If this year is a repeat of last, PA will see KBS at $9 a bottle come October/November. I'm amazed at how distribution works. If I was founders and knew a state was holding my beer in a "pending" status for 8 months before selling it I'd recall it and send it to the states where it sold out in hours and they were begging for more.

Pretty OFC

Pending reviews for both on tap and from growler. This was the first time there was a very distinct difference in the same beer from tap vs growler. On tap it smelled like just the kopi coffee with just a touch of imperial stout in the background. A coffee lovers dream. From the growler the coffee dropped a little bit (maybe because I've been holding it for nearly 3 weeks in my fridge) and smelled like a stout foremost with coffee as an addition. From the growler actually had hints of tobacco which was vn1 that I completely missed on tap.

how good was it?
