Fosters Premium Ale is a solid, highly drinkable ESB when it is fresh. Local store has a few cases of the oil cans as fresh as I have ever tasted it, the hops taste like a bitter flower rather than a metallic byproduct.

it is like a superman blend of lambic blended in part by each of the following breweries:
Cantillon, Girardin, Lindemans and Boon.
Fortunately it carries with it little to no Lindemans Cuvee Renee aspects, the blend ways heavily on what I remember Girardin black 1882 tasting/smelling like with a little Cantillon funk.

Dear Joe,
Since you like KBS so much, please come to PA so I have a reason to open a vertical of 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 KBS. I think it would be pretty fucking awesome to see how that beer has changed over the course of 4 years with a little side by side tasting.

Fingers crossed I can land bottles of Canadian breakfast stout without giving up half my cellar.

Since you will be 3/4 of the way there, will you continue into dirty Jersey and buy me a case of random vintage beer from upstairs in that shop?
Specifically looking for 10+ year old bottles of Chimay and more Rochefort 8 from '99.

You need a place to hide again? I got a busy weekend of homebrew related shit to do and could use some help.

I'm taking a sample of the apple brandy barrel aged imperial stout and possibly bottling and kegging it if it's ready. If I have enough bottles and caps I might bottle up some Berliner weisse and a sour beer and keg a beer or two to free up fermenters for more brewing.

Tonight's beer selection, all on tap:

Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA - it's so damn good
Southern Tier Pumking - Even better on tap than in bottles, it smells like a pumpkin/gingerbread sugar cookie, easily the best pumpkin beer around here
Allagash Curieux - Asked for Allagash White, this was mentioned as an alternative, and at the nominal price of free, we couldn't resist the upgrade. Grapefruit hops, tannic fruit skins, a bit of darker fruit and cloves from the bourbon, and of course oak.
Weyerbacher Octoberfest - Good beer, a bit hard to taste after those three plus wings plus spicy pizzas, but still good.

Tonight was a good night.

I get the shits of 120 really quick. I had it on tap a number of times and liked it more and more with every sip... then again I think each sip had me closer to being drunk since back then it was closer to 21% alcohol instead of the 15 or whatever it is now.

Dont you find it to be a bit too sweet? I have a couple bottles from 2004(?) and 2006 in the cellar. There was something a bit unique about having it on tap though.

I hate pumking. Everyone raves about that being the best pumpkin beer. The last bottle of it I had was like a hefeweizen on steroids. I got nothing but clove out of it with a hint of nutmeg and alcohol. To me, a pumpkin beer should have at least some pumpkin flesh flavor to it. Then again, I am spoiled by 2 local establishments that make their pumpkin beers with dessert pumpkins that are roasted and caramelized and it tastes like liquid pumpkin pie with hardly any spices. I think the more a pumpkin ale has spices, the less I like it. See also: DFH and weyerbacher

120 is really sweet, but I think it has enough hops and bitterness to back it up, and the warmth of the alcohol helps it out a bit. I didn't expect it to be that sweet, but I certainly liked it bottled and tapped.

I don't get the same feel for Pumking though, I taste pumpkin flesh in it plus a sugar cookie malt flavor. Weyerbacher and DFH were way spicier last year, haven't had either yet this year, but I feel like they were a lot more like what you described, especially WB, than Pumking. Southern Tier beers tend to be a bit more polarizing on the palette though, pretty much all of their heavier beers are described as either loved or overdone.

ST's "backwater" series that includes choklat, mokah, creme brulee and javah are so over-flavored with their perspective "special ingredients" that they far over-reach the boundaries of even tasting like beer. The most extreme case being creme brulee which tastes like liquified werther's original candy. I guess I just expected their pumpking to be on the same level of outlandish flavoring and was somewhat surprised to see it clearly follow suit. I haven't had any pumpkin beers yet this year, I think it's still too early. Maybe I'll revisit each of these pumpkin brews to see if my opinion is the same or if it's possible I had a bad bottle in the past.

750 shared with Klym; poured into Stone Nonic.

A: Just pure opaque black; comes off looking like an eight ball. Absolutely no light gets through. This could pass for a stout any day of the week. A lightly off color brown/cream/white film lines the top of the glass. Speckles and streaks of lacing round out the look of this very black coffee looking porter.

S: Black Coffee with spices: paprika, cardamom, light nutmeg, and some clove. A sweet roasty characteristic that sticks out, this sweet note really reassures me that this is a porter. You wouldn't expect to get that note as much out of a stout, which helps contrast the visual. Excited for the sip of this stout illusion! Light chili-pepper sweet note in the end.

T: This really is a coffee porter with spices, it remains consistent with the nose in that some clove/paprika go in the start and then give into the nutmeg and coffee roasts. The spiciness really overwhelms the backbone of this beer. This is like having a stake crusted (clearly garnished, but crusted) in basil. There's just too many condiments on this sandwich; if it wasn't for a late appearance of great tasting black coffee, I would have dinged this category a bit more.

M: there really is a bit too thin of a body here, the flavors are already so sweet and light that to have a redundant mouth makes for a suffocating drinking experience. I find myself gasping for air after consecutive sips. A more consolidated body would have really helped this brew. light bubble dissipation is apparent, but beyond that it's underwhelming.

O: This beer is a bit of a civil war. The visual is really quite promising; but the taste really battles itself. The spices really dominate the flavor experience to the point to where the backbone of the beer is irrelevant. Unfortunately for the beer. there is a really nice flavored beer behind all the fanciness. Furthermore, the "coffiness" of this beer is really only suggested; as there is a caffeine-esque flavor sensation to this beer. Don't be fooled, this is a superficial presentation from a brewery that is capable of much more sincere offerings. Make this an imperial oatmeal, and I'll come rushing back.

Do you use plagiarism in your school work as well?

Took a sample today of the imperial stout that has been aging in my apple brandy barrel for the past 2 months. The smell is awesome, the taste needs a bit more time to soak up more of the barrel character. Instead of it having a rich apple core flavoring, it's more subtle and like apple skin more than anything.

this isn't plagiarism, this is me citing from a source how gay you guys sound when you talk about beer whose soul purpose is to get intoxicated and clearly talk about its earthy potato green bean asparagus stout taste.

Ignorant, ignorant line there. You sound like a religious fanatic to be honest.

That phrase right there is why America is so behind on the times and has such rampant alcoholism that you do clearly see in other countries. It is only seen as a drug, clearly a beverage from which you do clearly need a buzz to enjoy.

Next beer to consume is a case of sam adams octoberfest which was way too expensive

Costs $25.99/24 bottles at BJs here, that's state wholesale cost. Best bargain I know of at that price.

Home brewing update from Saturday:
Bottled the belgian tripel that I had aged in an apple brandy barrel.
Bottled a saison
Kegged a stout that I added blackstrap molasses to
Added 10 pounds of wild fox grapes to 8-10 gallons of berliner weisse.

Finally have some carboys empty, time to brew a pumpkin ale for thanksgiving.

and to add to this since I know Dan cares...
checked in on my imperial stout that is aging in a brandy barrel for the past 2-3 months, it smells fucking amazing but the taste still needs to pick up just a bit more barrel flavoring before I am happy enough to keg and bottle the 10 gallons
