2-4 days till bottling! will be tasting saturday

what the fuck, have you taken any gravity readings?
You are going from brew to bottle in a week? I dont think I would trust any yeast strain except for maybe saison to do that kind of job that quick especially since your yeast was a year old...

shut up

ohhhhh i forgot that Nick knows everything about brewing beer due to the mountains turning blue. press on Evan! feel free to send some samples to Nick. ill pay for shipping and handling in hopes that Mr. know it all dies

youre such an angry adult, i feel bad for you because i once knew what that felt like

a local supermarket upped its bomber section. saw an ipa bottled 8 months ago. classic local distribution offloading old beer on unwitting new store. xmas beers still on shelves everywhere.
thanks once again to local distrobution

i did start another one where i used the hefeweizen HME(hopped malt extract) and then added a wheat UME (unhopped malt extract) with 3/4 cup of honey. hydrometer estimated like a 6% beer so i hope it turns out this way. been going for a week so far

im forecasting a hangover tomorrow. i realize its only 10 am real time but this week has been a bitch in the office and i have a bunch of quality beer in my fridge thats begging to be drank

on the agenda for tonight (all 750's except the russian river):
southampton black raspberry lambic
cantillon classic geuze
southampton saison faucille
bruery saison rue
russian river beatification

if thats clearly enough i think i have a unibroue anniversary ale from '04 or '05 in the back of the fridge and a rauchbier from stillwater/mikkeller im curious about

my parents abhor drinking. upon finding a single heinekin bottle cap when i was 20 and home from school (spencer and i had drank 2 six packs when he came over when they were out), my mom confronted me. i told her we split one six pack. she gasps and tells me i must have been really drunk and how irresponsible it was of me to do such a thing. she told me i cant be binge drinking underage, i might get alcohol poisoning and need to be really careful.

edit: TLDR - drank 3 beers, caught by mom, she thinks i almost died from alcohol poisoning

first batch of beer is terribad. beer is sour, clearly much malt taste at all, little bit of hops, clearly really sweet either, and wayy super overly fizzy (head is bigger than beer on the pour). Its a mr beer kit so this is what i added

1.12 lb can pale ale hopped malt extract
1 cup brown sugar
booster packet that came with the kit
2 gallons water

fermented for 2 weeks in the basement. i bet at least part of the problem was that the basement was probably around 60 degree Fahrenheit the whole time it was fermenting.

the rest of the problem is because theres more sugar than malt (booster packet was prolly mostly sugar too), so i ended up just making ethanol in water with whatever yeast cell byproducts are made making it taste like garbage.

only had 1 tho and feelin a buzz, it definitely is booze....

tldr: 1st attempt at making beer = fail

dude in synthesis you have to measure out reagents, take timepoints, and purify compounds. i figured beermaking would be ez and you just add the stuff and forget about it

only you added the stuff and didnt forget about it because you bottled it prematurely :P
the reason your beer is so foamy is because you bottled it too early and/or added too much priming sugar

having added that much fermentables beyond the base recipe, you should have given the yeast even more time to ferment than you did. is it sour or tangy? A high percentage of non-malt sugars can create tangy cider flavors. if its outright sour, you probably have an infection and need to better sanitize for future batches

its more tangy than sour, like a cider flavor is exactly it. the consistancy of the beer and carbonation makes it taste champagney almost

my other fermentation which has been going 2 weeks now started leaking this morning, lost like a half gallon out of the 2 gallons of beer. bitch to clean up.

i hope i fixed the leak so i can at least bottle some in a couple weeks to try it. i added malt extract instead of sugars with some honey and hoped to do a better job

bought a growler of workhorse ipa
they topped it off, so basically 68 ounces for 10 bucks. growlers are the best value in town. also, laurelwood has an insulated growler bottle, im buying that my next trip up. then i can have a stainless growler for shipping and an insulated one for me.

there is a difference between grabbing a bottled beer and mixing up an involved drink

i only did 2 bucks and after leaving i felt bad it was clearly 3 or so. ill make it up next time. they were totally friendly there too, which is saying something as portland people can be a bit too hip to be cool sometimes.

it depends on the place. if their growler fills are very reasonably priced, I will go upwards of $5. however if they are over-priced or providing ass for service, i might clearly even tip at all. last time i got a growler fill, the bar-back offered to fill me a growler of something that was clearly suppose to be an option so he got an automatic 10 spot. chances are, next time I am there he will do the same thing with expectations of what my reaction will be and I am cool with that

today i am going to selinsgrove brewery and they are pretty much my favorite "local" place. they are pretty strict as of late with what they will fill growlers of because the batch sizes are so small and they need to have enough to maintain on-site consumption options. depending on who the person working the bar is, they sometimes will allow me to fill some 1-liters instead of 2-liters which makes me very happy. id rather have 2x 1-liters to open up at different times then be stuck to have to finish a 2-liter after opening it. in that instance, its an automatic $5 unless something happens to influence me one way or the other

the chemist fails at beer making

way to go

dude in synthesis you have to measure out reagents, take timepoints, and purify compounds. i figured beermaking would be ez and you just add the stuff and forget about it

only you added the stuff and didnt forget about it because you bottled it prematurely :P
the reason your beer is so foamy is because you bottled it too early and/or added too much priming sugar

having added that much fermentables beyond the base recipe, you should have given the yeast even more time to ferment than you did. is it sour or tangy? A high percentage of non-malt sugars can create tangy cider flavors. if its outright sour, you probably have an infection and need to better sanitize for future batches

its more tangy than sour, like a cider flavor is exactly it. the consistancy of the beer and carbonation makes it taste champagney almost

if your bottles are already excessively carbonated. it would clearly be a bad idea to put them in a colder spot then what you have them in. if the carbonation continues to increase, they are going to explode on you and that can be quite dangerous

and one last thing i wanted to mention about this statement before i forget

doing a mr. beer kit or an extract recipe is clearly exactly what I consider brewing beer. It is a starting point to the process and an ideal way to begin if you are interested but its much more simplified than the real deal.

i guess the best way to compare this would be the difference between baking a cake from scratch and buying a premixed package from the store where you just add milk or water and bake it. are the outcomes the same? probably clearly but they are similar, right? the person making it from scratch has a lot more variables available to them in order to make mistakes and/or make it unique to their expected outcome... just a thought, clearly an argument
