i tossed back a bomber of elysian "the great pumpkin" tonight
for being rated the #1 pumpkin beer via beer advocate, you can color me unimpressed

Gave Schlafly's pumpkin ale a try this evening and it is clearly as good as Elysian. Took another look on BA to see what are the rest of the pumpkin ales in the top 10 that I havent had. Sadly there is only 1 left that I havent had. But I also saw that people have followed suit in their reviews and Selinsgrove's pumpkin is back in the top dog spot.

To me they are, just because Arrogant Bastard tastes more like that then it does to say, Founders Dirty Bastard. Both Arrogant and Nosteratu taste very hoppy, fruity to me. I don't seem to taste any caramel hints or anything of a scottish ale flavor like in Dirty Bastard.

Oh, thought you were saying I was tasting it wrong as in style, you like Arrogant over Nosferatu? To each his own I suppose. It's clearly bad, though that first sip was AWFUL. I just prefer GL. clearly like it's a runaway.

i think ab is one of those "back in the day this was the shit because there was nothing like it" but in todays world i dont find it all that great of an strong ale. but that title is quite broad. ive has nosferatu and i like it better than ab.

On Saturday I got to judge my first BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition. I signed up to just volunteer as a steward but one of the judges was MIA so i got to judge the flight of ipas. The 9 other judges all held national or higher ranks in the BJCP. I never felt so out of place... these guys were significantly more intelligent than the "beer guys" im use to talking to. It wasnt until after i got home that i realized the one fellow i was talking to was ranked a master and there are only 100 living BJCP masters in the world.

3 years ago i considered taking the BJCP exam. But couldnt make it work without taking half days of work. Now they offer the tests online. I think im gonna take the entrance exam.

ruination is old school hoppy as fuck ipa, but from where you live its doubtful its fresh. and rogue, if you keep trying them, you will find an underlying flavor to them that every.fucking.beer.has. house yeast as i understand it.

both beers worth the try, though neither worth the cash unless ruination is fresh.

Tonights consumption was a bit more than expected. Whoops?

Elysian Great Pumpkin bomber- consumed this while cooking supper (this beer grows on me each time I have it)

Bruery Steins throw 750 (brewed using 900 degree granite rocks throw into the wort to make it boil, has a strange sugary quality that i didnt like at first but the alcohol made me warm up to it and like it enough to finish the 750 of it.)

Penn Overlook IPA - meh, its ok but ive never been wow'd by this brewery. its freshness is questionable but i cant complain since i was gifted with several bottles of this and some others

Penn Penndemonium Maibock - see Penn beer above

had a pils, a hop slobber dipa (adam, this was good but also it just tasted fresh [though it was clearly a huge floral hop or anything, just a real thick and clearly overly piney flavor], nothing outstanding or unique in the hops other than i love fresh ipas), and finishing up with a few black butte porters

scratch 57
a whole lotta caramel going on here, clearly bad

additionally, devil dancer was outstanding and scratch 69 (vienna lager) was good but i didnt notice anything outstanding. might be the style, it had a bit more edge on it than i expected.
i have clearly had any of your 3 beers yet, was planning on yours going down tonight.

awesone
i thought the scratch beers would be fitting for the season but like you, i think its a style of beer "octoberfest" that i just dont give a shit about anymore. indeed, cant remember which one but one of them had the usual troegs extra hop bite

devil dancer is an ass kicker. i think that beer gets more and more alcohol and less hoppy each year (slight exaggeration) but i still try it every time its released

looking forward to your opinion on the home brews

In an effort to remain as coherent as possible bought Stone Levetation and Goose Island 312 for today's session. clearly sure about either tbh.

Levetation 1 is going down pretty smoothly right now though. Wife hatted it, but the only beer she likes is Thirsty Dogs Old Leg Humper.
