is it wrong that i have regular access to racer x and ive never been overly impressed?
granted it never super fresh in salem, but never super old either.  if its within a few weeks ill certainly pick one up for science.

oh no...its in the bottle now and shit has changed?
ive only ever had it on draft or growler

its been a while since i had it last, maybe its better than remembered
but i dont recall it being anything overly spectacular. guess ill buy it again.

i had racer x mixed up with racer 5. its racer 5 i find good, but average good. dont recall ever having racer x. bought one. will report back.

Awesome, this makes a lot more sense now. Agreed that racer 5 and reds rye are good but clearly stop you in your tracks good. Anxiously anticipating your opinion on Racer X

alaskan baltic porter
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/429/36532

this is good, their pilot series has been great imo, ive liked them all. none feel overdone with "flavorings" either, just well made beers.
and to think, alaskan amber was basically my gateway beer, that and fat tire. though i always liked alaskans better.

Heavy Seas Loose Cannon review finally up. It's a visually and olfactory delight that seems to be slightly betrayed by the taste and mouthfeel.

Both were fine, it's a very nice IPA, however the hype from how it looked & smelled lead to a twinge of disappointment once it came time to drink.

I'd still buy again.

I want more Double Dog Double Pale Ale. Will have to wait until next week though. Right now debating on grabbing a case of BPR or Genesee Cream to get me through the week (off pay week).

I keep hearing that Schlitz Gusto is pretty good, clearly sure if it's sold around here though.

did/do you like the regular session more? i personally think the session is one of the better lagers ive had (ive clearly had many euro lagers so just speaking about US here)
since im clearly a huge cda fan the black session is just something i pick up maybe once a year for a cheap change of pace
i need to try their holiday version too

also, primarily @ joe

this past saturday my friends and i got together and tasted the entire collection of Abyss.
2006 through 2011. wish we would of had a 2012 to go with it but i cant imagine fresh it was much different from the 2011

2006 was thin and like straight bitter coffee
2007 was like milk chocolate
2008 had quite a bit of earthy tobacco
2009 was an infected mess like tart cherry
2010 was pretty solid roasty with molasses and oak
2011 was pretty raw and hot with alcohol being the main component

my order of favorite to least was 07, 08, 06/10, 11, 09

i noticed something interesting with the different labels sitting beside one another
each label is clearly only different in it's design and where the reserve year and deschutes logo is but they also state the different % for the blend

for example in 07 and 10 it was described as aged in oak and oak bourbon barrels
in 11 it's bourbon, oak and wine barrels

2012 - malt beverage brewed with black strap molasses, licorice with cherry bark and vanilla added with 6% aged in oak bourbon barrels, 11% aged in oak barrels, and 11% aged in oak wine barrels
2011 - didnt find the box
2010 - stout brewed with licorice and molasses with 33% aged in oak and oak bourbon barrels
2009 - stout brewed with licorice and molasses with 33% aged in oak and oak bourbon barrels

p sure 2011 was also wine barrels.

Here is your friendly beer-related service announcement for the holidays.

The illusive, majestic, monk crafted and highly acclaimed westy 12 will be available in gift pack "bricks" that contain 6 bottles and a commerative glass. This is a "one-time" only export sale to assist the monks with renovations to the monestary and a last ditch effort to crush the westy black market.

It will be released exclusively at Total Wine stores on December 12th. Prices starting at $86 so id imagine $100 will be common place. Whike thats a hefty price, it comes out to like $12 a bottle or so depending on what the glass price is. clearly too horrible considering the black market price that starts at $40 a bottle. I for one will clearly be making this purchase mainly due to total wine being something unseen in PA. If anyone sees these and takes the plunge, id be curious to hear your opinion. Id be even more curious if you did a side by side comparison of westy, rochefort 10 and bernardus apt 12. I already have a strong opinion and dont want to influence.

This happens a week from today. Places in NY and VA started selling them prematurely. Sounds like $85 is the going rate.

"liked it" is the understatement of the year.
real talk
this shit rapes abyss without lube
how difficult would it be to get one of the last 2 batches that uses sumatra?

this beer was exactly what i needed when i refer earlier to being in a beer "rut" and drinking mediocre things as of late

yup, ive had it
as far as imperial or double ipa's go. its on the sweeter side and that really helps to hide the alcohol (if im remembering correctly.) i had it back when it first came out and was only offered on draft or in big bottles. ive seen it floatin around in 12oz bottles/4-packs recently so maybe ill revisit it. i will tell you though, this beer really varies in consistency. i distinctly remember it completely wow'ing me one time and second guesing if i was poured the wrong thing another time

old rasputin xv was p awesome. i think i preferred it to the abyss (the new one with the % aged in wine i dont think makes it better). but at $20 a bottle it will be a once a year thing :(.

Total wine does clearly exist in PA. I have 2 friends going out of state this weekend who are looking to buy it. I was offered to "buy in" on some but declined. I already have bottles of 12 and 8 that were sent to me from Belgium last year and cost about the same or slightly cheaper than what these gift packs are going for.

super GZ to westy's release being delayed for 8 months and garnering more media attention than the final chapter in Stone's vertical stupid series that ends today after being 10+ years in the making
