my tf2 crashes whenever i try to connect to a server
i guess i wont be playing for a while

This might sound both trivial and stupid but did you restart steam and/or your pc?
There was an update on both the 29th and 30th. The 29th included the gold rush map update along with the new medic achievements/weapons and then the one yesterday included some bug fixes/patches and removed some commands from the console.

My steam had several hiccups and I got meni TF2/hl2 errors last night but restarting steam always seemed to resolve the issue. If all else fails m8 you can always uninstall TF2 and redownload a fresh copy. Waiting an hour or two to redownload the game is better than waiting for a response to an issue they may or may not have a resolution to.

was only the goldrush update, was working the day before
i havent tried any other games, will try l8r

single player worked, for what its worth

nice that achievements are retroactive, i got the 7k and 10k healing in one round achievements as soon as i played a round of medic
and ive got over half a million total heal points

no idea
when you told me to delete the caches for the maps, they might have been recreated correctly
meaning that would have been the problem, corrupted cache files, but no idea in hell why, because i had never played goldrush ever and it was hanging when i tried to enter the first time

The cache files would have been downloaded when you first attempted to join a server running the gold rush map. What I am thinking is that the cache files probably became corrupt before you ever had a chance to play that map (since you timed out when first attempting to join a server with that map running.)
