Differences from DotA
Although the gameplay of League of Legends is very similar to DotA (Defense of the Ancients), there are numerous tweaks that make its gameplay unique and user-friendly.
New in LoL:
One central Merchant to purchase all items in a user-friendly tree.
Player can select two summoner spells in combination with any character.
All Champions have access to the 'recall' ability to return to their base.
Ability to buy a complete item from a single inventory slot.
Brush. Tall grass is located at key points throughout the map and walking into it makes you invisible to any opponent not in the grass. This can be used for juking much like the fog of war in DotA.
Ability Power is a stat which will add damage to your spells just like attack damage makes your auto attacks more powerful. (There are also spells which use your attack damage to gain more damage.)
Certain stats are shown when you have an enemy selected: Attack Damage, Ability Power, Movement Speed, Armor, Magic Resistance, Attack Speed.
When you use a spell or hover over its icon on your spell bar a circle will show up which indicates the effective range of the spell.
Lay out of map is different, with different monsters, more minions to kill
There is a 3v3 map (with 2 lanes) in addition to the 5v5 DotA like map.
New, improved tower AI that follows a simple algorithm.
Not in LoL:
Denying creeps or towers (and in certain situations heroes).
Loss of gold upon death.
Buyback after death
Raised elevation (Fog of War changes due to elevation in DotA)
Dynamic Terrain (DotA has trees which block movement/vision, the trees can be destroyed by certain spells)
Both in LoL and DotA however different mechanics:
Runes are present in both LoL and DotA. In LoL Runes are obtained by killing certain neutrals on the map (The Lizard Buff for Red and The Golemn Buff for Blue, the red runes attach a slow and damage over time where as the blue rune increases mana regeneration and lowers cooldowns on spells). There are also other runes depending on the map. In DotA runes (also referred as power ups) are found on the river, which randomly spawn on either the East or West side of the river. There are 5 types of runes which can be obtained (Haste rune gives maximum movespeed, Illusion rune gives 2 illusions, Double Damage rune doubles your damage, Regeneration runes heal heroes and Invisibility rune makes you invisible)
Baron Nashor. He is similar to DotA's Roshan, but on death gives team-wide XP, and gold, and a buff that increases damage and regen.
Inhibitors (the equivalent of Barracks in DotA) respawn after a set amount of time. Killing an inhibitor only spawns one super minion in the lane per creep wave. If you destroy all of an opposing team's inhibitors each lane will spawn two super minions per creep wave.

microtransactions system seems to be the same as every game using that financial model, give perks to the people who pay your salary, make the people who want to play for free feel cheated

One central Merchant to purchase all items in a user-friendly tree.
pros; simplicity / smaller learning curve
cons; no strategy required in planning most efficient paths of gearing
verdict: pro-casual
Player can select two summoner spells in combination with any character.
pros/cons; a persistent gameplay element that spans different hero choices
verdict: different/none
All Champions have access to the 'recall' ability to return to their base.
pros; no need to rely on town portals/running back to base
cons; no strategy related to above
verdict: pro-casual
Ability to buy a complete item from a single inventory slot.
pros; simpler, no juggling items around to complete recipes
cons; in addition to the one-stop-shop, less strategic
verdict: not really significant on its own
Brush. Tall grass is located at key points throughout the map and walking into it makes you invisible to any opponent not in the grass. This can be used for juking much like the fog of war in DotA.
pros; different opportunities for setting up ambushes/defense/etc
cons; dont need to rely on the landscape of the map
verdict: different, seems more random, less moving = more boring
Ability Power is a stat which will add damage to your spells just like attack damage makes your auto attacks more powerful. (There are also spells which use your attack damage to gain more damage.)
pros/cons; allows casters vs melee to be more equally balanced
verdict: depends on its implementation in balancing
Certain stats are shown when you have an enemy selected: Attack Damage, Ability Power, Movement Speed, Armor, Magic Resistance, Attack Speed.
pros; simpler / smaller learning curve
cons; dont need to rely on recognition of characters and their item builds
verdict: pro-casual
When you use a spell or hover over its icon on your spell bar a circle will show up which indicates the effective range of the spell.
pros/cons; different interface element, allows easier planning, lower learning curve for each individual character, probably better to encourage people to not play the same 3 characters over and over again
verdict: neutral on this one
Not in LoL:
Denying creeps or towers (and in certain situations heroes).
pros/cons (depending on perspective); simpler, slower game
verdict: CASUALS
Loss of gold upon death.
pros/cons (depending on perspective); simpler, places less importance on keeping yourself alive
verdict: CASUALS
Buyback after death
pros/cons (depending on perspective); simpler, less strategic value
verdict: neutral, no signifigance on its own/ i cant measure without knowing the games pace
