I support a punishment system like SomethingAwful.com uses:

Probation = suspended for xx hours (few hours for minor, weeks to months for some more severe)
Autoban = banned for using a mod only thread tag
Ban = banned, pay $10 to reregister account
Permaban = banned, never come back

When a user is banned, their avatar is changed to a PROBATION, BANNED, or PERMABANNED avatar in funny text, and below that is the title "by modname". At the bottom of the post they were banned for the text (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION/BANNED/PERMABANNED FOR THIS POST. All of the bans are listed in "the leper's colony" http://forums.somethingawful.com/banlist.php
