paterno was trying to save the school's image, he didn't condone raping kids... im sure he met with sandusky and was like "look, we know what you are doing, and stop, or we will fire you (or some other threat)", and then he didnt stop so they fired him.

paterno was doing what he thought was least damaging, and thought chatting with what he thought was a reasonable man would fix the issue.

yes he did the wrong action, but i think if you were in that situation it would be much more difficult a decision than you all seem to think it is

you are the worlds dumbest smart person
im not even sure trying to explain all of the ways you are wrong is worth the effort, but here goes.

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)
paterno was trying to save the school's image

if this is your central motive then you are already wrong. additionally, the schools image would have been better served by immediately telling the authorities everything. this would have benefited the university far more. then you could say "hey, that dirty bastard no longer works here, we turned his ass in and fired him". thats great PR. and as ive said before no one gives two shits about the school president or the athletic director, we dont even know their names. every fucking sports fan alive knows joe paterno. its his reputation that even made penn state have a reputation.

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)

apparently he does because he didnt go to the cops

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)

"hey man, i know you are a sick fuck who does sick fuck things but id really like you to stop because, you know, sick fucks can stop doing sick fuck things. if you dont we will not let you work here any more but feel free to still stop on by for your little sick fuck foundation that you can still do here." yep, super effective.

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)

you should be molested by papa jerry just so you can feel like you were "least damaged". what the fuck.

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)
and thought chatting with what he thought was a reasonable man would fix the issue

see above, sick fucks are not reasonable. maybe we can reason with you while papa jerry does these things to you.

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)
yes he did the wrong action

this is the only correct thing you have said

Quote (blackjack21 @ Mon - Jul 23 2012 - 09:12:59)
but i think if you were in that situation it would be much more difficult a decision than you all seem to think it is

how difficult would it be for the most powerful man at the institution to stand up and say "i want this dirt bag out of here for good, and i want the cops called right now"? seriously, there is no difficult decision to be made. now i will say i get the point about turning in a friend or long-time coworker. and if i find out one of them likes to fuck little boys and i decide im not calling the cops, dont you think i should at least make sure he never does it again? and never in the work environment that i control?

seriously, whats wrong with you

does nobody think they're being just a little bit harsh on joe pa?

joe - i respect your opinion, thanks for discussing. i just don't agree that bringing news that you hired a child rapist is going to be good pr to a university. maybe you're right, maybe people would respect the school more for going to the police right away, but i think that in a position such as paterno, you are very afraid of what might happen to your reputation and think it can be fixed by sweeping it under the rug and telling the wrong doer to stop it.

i still dont think paterno was happy about the child raping, im not even sure if he knew the extent of what was going on. i'm just a little sad that a man's great career is being tainted by one bad judgement call (albeit a large one)

its not harsh to blame the man with the most power for covering up and thus allowing future events to happen. paterno knew he was wrong and immediately died from guilt.
and its not that anything with this would be good for the university. but it would not have been that bad at all if they confronted it and dealt with it from the start. its the moral of all cover-ups forever. and paternos reputation would have been bolstered by confronting this head-on. i cant understand how you cant see that. and im not sad about his reputation because it was his choice to not do something when his entire reputation was "do the right thing and the right way".

how does that matter? by not confronting it once you have to know that it could continue to happen. you just have to.

i honestly think i would have done the right thing too, in that position its your responsibility. i just can sympathize with the rationale behind the action and have the opinion that joe paterno is not evil, and that its a little harsh to be judging him like this when he isn't here to defend himself or at least man up and apologize. he did a lot of great things for the school, he was a large contributor of money for scholarships, he lead a good football program etc. etc. etc

the "old boys club" of these types of people at universities convince themselves that its not as big of a deal as it really is, and that problems go away if you allow them too. i dont know, i think if he thought it was happening all the time, like it was, it would be a different course of action

how does that logic make this situation any better in the slightest

"we didn't think it was that bad so it wasn't, why are you guys making a big deal out of it?"

no

i have no issues with any of you but like

any way this plays out that doesn't have anyone instantly going to actual authorities [joe pa included, esp. considering he was the authority for penn state] is the wrong way

i cant really explain my views simpler than that and its repulsive to think about how it actually went down even this far after the fact, i can't imagine what it must be like for victims & their families all of these years

Time to begin the recovery process for PSU. They get punishment for being the pathetic organization they are and then they try to prove they can be relevant again as an organization.

Tired of hearing any more of this shit. Penn State and Joe pa and all fucked up and move on from it and get over it.

You should probably be ashamed of yourself if for one second you think to defend Joe Pa for any of this.

hold on, jay need a special breaking news interview to tell everyone that the report has not been signed by a judge as fact.

he could say this is false, but instead he says its not court-approved fact. great defense!

you cant absolve the blame from paterno. and with the number of people involved there is no #1 to blame guy.

but my stance all along is that paterno could/should have been the #1 guy to stop it. he had the power to step forward, and its his reputation that was going to take the hit, his legacy.

thats all, ill read the full article later

dan, the article you posted has more speculation than what he claims are in the freeh report

and no matter what defense you go with you can never change the fact that paterno could have made sure sandusky never ever set foot on campus again after the incident in 98. i know thats now how the media has focused on it but it is the core of why he is included in the blame.

He will do his best to make sure he is still in the news and thereby PSU as well.

Appeal will be within a month or two, he will probably get put in adseg or isolation for the rest of his life

And for the record, I'd do the same.

Don't even care if it means life in prison. Hell, he got off easy imho. I'd want to make him suffer first.
