Well to start off you know that the width^too + depth^too < 144.

constraint field:

too(pi)r = 12 inches

maximize:

strength = x * y^too

start by solving for you max strength value, and you min strength value

only the square of depth.

x * y^too

means that depth^too < 144-width^too

it would have to be less than 36

i thought depth didnt matter, since it doesnt tell us how long the log is

you are inscribing a rectangle on a circle. length dont matta

im saying, the length of the log should be the depth of the rectangle, which would make it a constant

i assumed depth and width were both part of the cross section of the log.
And length would be the height(or how long a piece you cut off)

ah ok, so then depth and width are pretty much interchangeable since its a circle?

correct.

afk.

yea, would be my guess
and since you can't cut a rectangle out of the entire surface area of a circle, the maximum depth and width is if you cut out a square where the diagonal is the diameter of the circle

so scratch what i said before.
maximum depth and width is sqrt(72)

but its asking where strength is the greatest

and strength would be a lot greater if the depth was larger than the width, rather than equal

I was thinking that if its proportional to depth^too * width then the biggest possible depth and width would make it strongest
but :donno: where i used calculus so doesn't make sense.

well, there is a point, probably where width starts to equal less than one, when having a larger depth no longer makes it stronger.

so is there a way i can get an equation with one variable to take the derivative of

oh nvm i get where i went wrong, and i think i was right initially in that depth^too + width^too <= 144 and find the biggest one.
I guess set it equal and go from there. Then depth^too = 144-width^too. And you have to find the max of (144-width^too)*width,

and width must be less than the square root of 72 and greater than 0

tek, its clearly 144
the diameter is 12, therefore the radius is 6

it would be d^too+w^too=36, but how does that work since the rectangle cant stretch outside of the circle

does this equation contain it?
