One Octovarium was more than enough

I am not really excited about an album with six long songs, In The Presence of Enemies pt2 and Ministry of Lost Souls lost momentum and dragged on for way too long, and Octovarium went around 18 minutes until there was anything interesting in the song. It seems that many of the longer songs they have done on the past two albums were long for the sake of being long, The Dark Eternal Night broke down into a jam session in the middle and picks up again when it wouldn't have lost anything by ending three and a half minutes into the song. The Glass Prison and This Dying Soul were great songs which worked through their extended length, something which may reflect MP's heavier contributions in these songs' writing (Repentance was pretty good too).

James LaBrie's vocals are doing anything to help long songs, he doesn't have nearly the range he used to, and he never really had much intensity. The lack of a dynamic vocal performance is really a weak point in "epic" prog songs, and I suppose he hasn't been able to do this since he blew out his voice, but the band should really work around that, or try to fix this lack of dynamic voice through multiple guitar solos along the lines of Under a Glass Moon and This Dying Soul.
