Posting some bands as I'm pretty sure DC is still a Dream Theater fan club.
Dream Theater (ofc)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKAkreYSns4Symphony X - the best band in progressive metal
New (07) SX:

Old (95) SX:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z454yP-XkwUScale the Summit - Instrumental prog rock/metal band, they recently joined the ProgNation 09 tour and I can't wait to see them. These guys are my age and they are the best prog band to emerge this decade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXq0FcYbAsUThe Kris Norris Projekt - Instrumental metal, very melodic. One of my favorite guitarists, formerly of Darkest Hour. Two songs on the album feature Randy from Lamb of God, rest is instrumental. Oh, and @ Sgull, he has a Dream Theater tattoo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2mB2zdw98MWatchtower - I heard Control and Resistance when I was in high school, around 2003-04, and I was blown away by it, I hadn't heard anything quite like it, and I later found out that it was from the 80s. Pioneers of progressive and technical metal, cited as an influence by everyone from Metallica to Dream Theater.

Blotted Science - Instrumental extreme metal, pretty much technical death metal without vocals. Ron Jarzombek (guitar) of Watchtower, Alex Webster (bass) of Cannibal Corpse, and Charlie Zeleny, Jordan Rudess' drummer of choice.
