but i do. just got Chronicles (songs from their start until about 1990). on the 2nd disc, enjoying it. they keep changing styles, and it doesn't become super-apparent unless you don't pay attention to the vocals. then the songs are pretty clearly divided into stages.

i also promised myself to listen to DT because gary and gull like them, and they got me listening to tool again (and they got me to decide to get an rs membership, which is neither here nor there in terms of music).

bonus material: some guy described rush as heavy metal and i'm still trying to see it. not happening so far. i see them as a kind of alt/indie rock that sort of changes when their tools change (instrumental changes over time to go with the times without being typical of the times). and at some point they got into openly criticizing the times. i don't know if i like that as much, because music has an opportunity to push off the times, change them, or say something about them without making it obvious. like animal farm, which is not obvious to non-idiots (but to me the the /fail was when the animals started doing the talking for people, when sadly it would've been better if the book had dropped all the parallels and the animals altogether).

it's called I Love You Man, it's a funny movie and that scene related to Rush.

i agree with you about how they were a rare thing in their time. i don't really know where i'd place them in terms of music history but i like how they did their own thing. they just made music that meant something to them and it connected with people, and they did it without trying to add too much crap into the mix (which is why they stood out so much in their time). i always liked them but i guess i bought the CD in order to find out how much i like them, and how much was just my first impression from when i was a kid. i was kind of lucky when i was a kid in terms of music, because my dad listened to a lot of stuff that was a bit different, and it gave me a taste for stuff that's not over-produced. not that i didn't like some pop stuff while it was big.
