i'll be posting some thoughts about the stuff i listen to and download
this will include a variety of genres and although most of the stuff i post is new, i might discover some older stuff too

Grabbed today from nodata.tv:
The Bloody Beetroots - Church of Noise single was pretty bad as expected, they've went downhill ever since that death crew thingy

65daysofstatic - Silent Running is a pretty decent album, obviously had higher expectations but it's still a nice listen

Something from last week:
Brodinski's DJ Kicks was pretty nice, worth checking out if you're into not-that-cheesy house or techno

Synkro - Stop & Think is a very solid electronic ep with 3 very different tracks, one of the best electronic eps i've heard in a while

Brian Eno - Panic of Looking is very different from the Eno I've heard because it has a lot of singing in it but it really works, good stuff

Bit late on this: DOOM ft. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood - Retarded Fren is a pretty good track and I'm glad Yorke didn't ruin it with his whiny singing like any other potentially awesome collaboration

Speaking of Radiohead, Jamie xx' rework of Bloom is pretty decent, although the amount of TKOL remixes is starting to get pretty ridiculous considering how disappointing the album itself was

Downloaded a few albums purely out of curiosity from nodata today, both tagged with something electronic (idm, techno) and jazz:

DARKSIDE - Darkside EP is very interesting, definitely have to give this a few more listens
First track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm1ftqRRLj0

Didn't really feel Floating Points - Shadows LP at the first listen, seemed kinda boring

Downloaded Kingdom - Dreama, wish he would evolve a bit from that booming bass and mutilated vocals. They worked on previous releases but are starting to get boring.

Sunn O))) meets Nurse With Wound - The Iron Soul of Nothing is a pretty weird release for me as I'm not that used to drone, but the third track called Ash on the Trees is pretty cool with all those broken glass sounds and vocals and stuff.

BOYS NOIZE STUFF BELOW

SCNTST - Monday has been out for some days already, but Boys Noize Records is making it hard to get fast download access to their releases if you're not in waffles or something.

Great release imo, very different tracks. Favorite is definitely 'Stracia', that track is mental. Definitely have to keep an eye out for his releases. Globus has definite Boys Noize vibes in it.

New (legally free!) Rynecologist & Strip Steve track:
http://www.boysnoize.com/blog/strip-steve-...cker-free-track
Interesting concept to say the least.

Trying to get my hands on Maelstrom - Tanger EP but it's hard since it's been taken down from just about every public file host

Same goes for Boys Noize - Sessions pt 1, you basically have to grab them the first week they've been out or it gets incredibly difficult.

Zomby - Nothing EP grabbed, nothing groundbreaking here. Airhorns, weird vocals, aggressive drums, overall dark wibe and smooth bass. Someone said most of these tracks were in the japanese version of Dedication (the Zomby album released earlier this year) and they kinda sound like that too.

Been listening to Siriusmo - Pearls and Embarassments quite a bit this week, I like how he can produce a variety of electronic music. Reminds me of Aphex Twin in a way.

Past few days have largely consisted of: Nujabes - Spiritual State, Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues and P.O.S - Get Better.

None of those are exactly brand new.

I like P.O.S a lot, brings a fresh touch to hip-hop. Particularly liking the unordinary beats on some of the tracks on the album.

Fleet Foxes is pretty much what I expected, no idea why I didn't download this earlier.

Nujabes' album was a pleasant surprise, very good music for studying or stuff like that, but it's by no means just background music.

Would love to see Boys Noize live but Finland isn't exactly the best place to see anything good electronic, mostly just angry generic metal bands here.
Kinda want to start my next studies in Helsinki so I can see more live stuff without paying my ass off for train tickets.
Also M83's gig in Finland in February was instantly sold out, feels bad man.

Glad someone has something to say in this brog though, you can suggest me stuff too.

Listened through Ulver - Bergtatt yesterday and I have to say I liked it, proal going to listen to it more.

A-Trak & Zinc - Stingray single grabbed (original and Benga remix), sounds way worse than what these two could produce individually. It has some parts that sound like watered-down catchy A-Trak at his best. This is coming from a guy who barely listened to anything else than A-Trak last year. Just lacks the subtle and interesting elements of A-Trak's stuff, this single is just in-your-face booming shit. The build up had me hoping for something great but it has one of the worst drops I've heard so far this year. It's not that bad of a track honestly, just way less than I expected.

Benga has a brosteppy remix of it, which works because it was already supposed to be a massive track (which it wasn't for me).

As the winter is slowly coming, I'll be listening to more dark and ambient music like atmospheric black metal, post-rock, post-metal and various types of ambient, without disregarding new releases from interesting artists regardless of genre. Chillwave or electro or anything warm and poppy like that just doesn't really feel right during winter when it's pretty much dark all the time (okay, not all the time).

Wongraven - Fjelltronen is a good album imo, I guess you should call it medieval ambient. The album cover is pretty much what this album feels like. While it's mostly pretty dark, it still gets some interesting shifts towards 'lighter' ambient, like at the latter half of the first track Det Var En Gang Et Menneske (which could mean 'once upon a time there was a man' judging by how similar Norwegian and Swedish are).

User Image

What last.fm has to say about this:
"Wongraven is a one-man project by Satyricon frontman Sigurd 'Satyr' Wongraven, formed in 1994. He wanted to utilize ambient and medieval sounds which he could not fit it in Satyricon."

No idea why I didn't get Peste Noire - L'Ordure à l'état Pur earlier this year, absolutely refreshing album. Easily my favorite metal album of the year and prolly going somewhere on my top albums of 2011 list.

Also happy to hear good Finnish music: Tenhi - Saivo is a melancholic and minimal neofolk album, really liking it as background music at least.

Might do a best of 2011 list later with different genres etc.

I'll try to include youtube links in the future, just didn't know if anyone was even reading this lol.

This whole Peste Noire album is madness

Peste Noire - Casse, Pêches, Fractures et Traditions

skip to 2:10 if you're feeling impatient

Peste Noire - Sale Famine von Valfoutre

Also some Ulver

Ulver - Capitel V-Bergtatt-ind i Fjeldkamrene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC2mMl9EQEk

Haven't really mentioned any other metal yet, Wongraven is purely a (dead?) side project by Satyr.

I might aswell throw some Alcest in here as I've listened to it quite a bit again.

Radiohead - The Daily Mail & Staircase single grabbed. I'm seriously starting to hate their latest stuff, sounds pretentious and whiny, yet I still keep downloading their releases hoping they would be good.
I'm no expert but to me it sounds like they got on the electronic music wagon a bit late and are just releasing stuff with no melodies, boring electronic backgrounds and Yorke whining.

Sessions pt. 1 was on nodata earlier, grabbed it. Also downloading some 2011 808 State album but I guess it has just some old tracks.
Sessions was not really all that spectacular, neither of the tracks climaxed like some Boys Noize tracks on Oi Oi Oi! and Power. Still worth downloading.

Oh yeah, I'm familiar with him. Didn't know he had a new release out, thanks.
Also got the LiveLoveA$AP which was pretty cool but to be honest I liked beats more than I liked A$AP himself.

Some new electronic stuff I grabbed after Christmas:

Rynecologist X Days mix, which is a legally free download
http://www.mediafire.com/?w8l6j2s1644k7um

Tracklist:
INTRO
1. STRIP STEVE & RYNECOLOGIST – Kicker [CDR]
2. EATS EVERYTHING – The Size [Dirtybird]
3. HOUSEMEISTER – Weird Friends feat. P.O.S. (TWR72 dub rmx) [Boys Noize Rec]
4. KOLSCH – Opa [Kompakt]
5. NINA KRAVIZ – Show Me Your Time [Rekids]
6. NO BOUNDARIES – Modular Pursuits (DAPHNI rmx) [Planet E Communications]
7. BLAWAN – Peaches (Coronation) [Clone Rec]
8. BRODINSKI & RYNECOLOGIST – Steel Brothers (POUPON rmx) [CDR]
9. AZARI & III – Reckless (With Your Love) (TIGA rmx) [Turbo Recordings]
10. BRODINSKI – Let The Beat Control Your Body feat. LOUISAHHH!!! [Bromance Rec]
11. CLOUDS – Articles (Ado rmx) [Turbo Recordings]
12. DAS GLOW & STYLE OF EYE – Eye Love You
13. PARA ONE – Compute feat. SURKIN [Marble Music]
14. UNTOLD – Little Things Like That [Clone Rec]
15. THE WEEKND – The Birds (Part 1)
16. DAN HARTMAN – I Can Dream About You [MCA Records]

This was exactly my kind of release, just except for the last few tracks.
One producer that I found from this mix was Kölsch who aroused my curiosity with this fresh track:

Kölsch - Opa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52L8IEpWeag

&ME is a producer I stumbled upon purely just going from some video to a recommended video to a recommended video. That loop has sucked me in for hours on several occasions.

&ME - Purple Rain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdOR-8O3YoY

One of the most pleasantly surprising recent releases for me is Bart B More & TAI - Nobody Canna Cross It (Di Bus Can Swim). Just judging the release by the facts that it involves Bart B More, one of the most over-rated producers in his field (imo) and weird and Diplo-like title, is pretty much wrong. In my opinion TAI is one of the most talented under-the-radar producers who pops out a tune or two in a year but they are really spectacular. This collaboration is no exception. It's just something about this guy's work that makes me feel happy, and not the happy-hardcore kind of happy, but the "holy shit this is awesome" kind of happy.

Bart B More & TAI - Nobody Canna Cross It (Di Bus Can Swim)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boCOQxZjqX4
Absolutely massive

One of my favorite electronic tracks of the year would be DIM & TAI - Glass, also involving TAI and unexpectedly huge drop. Hearing this track for the first time made me so glad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YpzEztSD4c

Also found this next release via random recommended videos, probably because of the attracting cover. The Mould - Karma EP shows definite links to fellow Russian producer Proxy, but also slamming something new to the table. Tracks are pretty simple but banging in their own way, not exactly melodical masterpieces but bassy monsters without going ridiculous.

The Mould - Karma
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc-1mNxRXcc

Here's Proxy for comparison as I mentioned him too.

Proxy - Dancing In The Dark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26-SmPa2hVk

Also someone mentioned Huoratron in a conversation regarding similar artists to The Mould so I might aswell throw him in here too. Really I was just asking for an excuse to show off imo the best Finnish producer's work. Too bad Finland is so retarded regarding electronic music that he has to tour mostly somewhere else.

Huoratron - Gbay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bRQIVvgNi0
And no, your subwoofer isn't broken.

All this talk about Boys Noize stuff and gem-of-a-producers (I just made that term up, don't hate) made me remember I kinda was supposed to make a best of 2011 list.

Browsed through my music folder looking for something I hadn't listened to in a while. That something was The Knife - Silent Shout. Amazing album, Karin combined with hypnotizing beats is something special. What I noticed about them on their last.fm page is that they had iamamiwhoami on similar artists. I had seen that name many times last year but it just sounded too pretentious to look more into. Boy was I wrong. Iamamiwhoami is no The Knife but maybe a bit happier cousin of theirs.

It's like Christmas all over again: New Alcest LP popped on nodata yesterday. They just seem to get better and better by every album.
Alcest - Les Voyages De L’Âme is more post-rockish than Ecailles de Lune (I'll just leave the flyturds out of this) but still maintains the dreamy vibe familiar from previous Alcest releases. It's so amazing how you can make something so dreamy and shoe-gazey with still including post-metal and black metal in every song.

As I copypasted the proper album name, I noticed of Montreal's new LP is out for DL aswell. Might have to grab that too, haven't listened to of Montreal in ages.

Also listened through Skream - Skreamizms vol 6 a few times. I'm not really a huge dubstep fan but Skream makes stuff that is massive without going ridiculously overboard (read: Skrillex).

skream is just about the only dubstep producer i listen to willingly because i am a lame-o

other great hiphop releases from the past year

blu - noyork
big krit - returnof4eva
kendrick lamar - section 80
a$ap rocky - livelovea$ap
the roots - undun
common - the dreamer the believer
pusha t - fear of god ii
shabazz palaces - black up

the weeknd - all 3 of his mixtapes are killer
frank ocean - nostalgia/ultra

last two are some smooth cats making chill as fuck r&b
the roots knocked it out of the park
noyork is exactly what i was waiting for
big krit nailed it
i love the beats for rocky's stuff, his rhymes aren't that shabby either
black up is kinda out there, weird beats for the rhymes but its oddly good
common surprised with a killer album
kendrick lamar was on repeat the whole summer for me
pusha t was very solid, had to check it out after the track with tyler that was really really good [trouble on my mind]

i think goblin was this year too and is worth checking out, but i like bastard more and don'tl ike goblin enough to put it on that list

skream is just about the only dubstep producer i listen to willingly because i am a lame-o

other great hiphop releases from the past year

blu - noyork
big krit - returnof4eva
kendrick lamar - section 80
a$ap rocky - livelovea$ap
the roots - undun
common - the dreamer the believer
pusha t - fear of god ii
shabazz palaces - black up

the weeknd - all 3 of his mixtapes are killer
frank ocean - nostalgia/ultra

last two are some smooth cats making chill as fuck r&b
the roots knocked it out of the park
noyork is exactly what i was waiting for

Damn I sure have to check out some of those releases knowing how good your taste is. And yeah, Goblin was early 2011 I think. Only hip-hop for me during 2011 was pretty much OFWGKTA shit, which I enjoyed to a certain extent.

Lately I've been listening to Swans a lot, some of their stuff is just plain creepy (like Soundtrack for the Blind or is it Soundtrack for the Blind People?) but some, calmer yet distinct Swans-type songs really show how awesome Michael Gira is. You can't just put something like Filth on any time you want, it's so intense and distressing. I don't think I ever listened through it in one sitting. Soundtrack was pretty much the same, it has creepy monologues and a clear point when the whole album spirals into insanity. The band is definitely interesting, I'll have to invest more time into it.

Swans - Animus

Also note to self:

Listen through that some day, looks like it has a lot of familiar names but also some new.

Some ridiculously good 2011 tracks I discovered today. Actually this isn't the first time I listened to Jacques Greene, but I don't know why I never looked further into his discography.

Blawan - Getting Me Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBEX3x1ca8s
I feel like the bass is massaging my brains. Great sampling, love the contrast between the cheerful sample and the dark bass.

Jacques Greene - Another Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79J58LlPiAg

These two tunes are great examples of how big of a difference a good choice of vocals can make.

Boys Noize and Mr Oizo (two of my all time favorites) join forces. Already heard a radio rip of Callgurls a few months ago but some new tracks also. Not really feeling these tracks, Boys Noize's presence is pretty much adding an extra oompf, rest sounds like Oizo. This is particularly clear in the track The Qat. I think Callgurls is best of the bunch. Also expected way bigger drops from such collaboration. Tracks are not really that horrible but sound way too simple in structure knowing what these two geniuses are capable of.

Didn't remember how good Teeel - Amulet was, very under-rated imo.

Teeel - Galilean Moons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuhV956wxwE

I think the version on my album has a bit higher BPM but this is the only one I could find on youtube.

Random grab of the week:

Grimes - Visions

Saw a lot of hate for this album, mostly about childish voice and over-hypedness and what not. Each to their own I guess, I love most of the songs on this album.

Grimes - Vowels = Space and Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCY6-8L15Fc

Also noticed some new albums from bands/artists I haven't really listened to but know like Tennis, Xiu Xiu and Gonjasufi, might have to check those out later.

The latest Neon Indian album was pretty boring imo. I think he recorded it in Helsinki, no idea why would you want to make a chillwave album in Finland. Psychic Chasms is pretty solid album though.

The only thing I remember hearing from him is Alice, which is annoyingly catchy. I think I have the whole album though.

Downloaded Teemu T - Entheoform from nodata, just because it's a Finnish name and it was labeled with ambient, dub techno and minimal. I'm always interested to find good Finnish electronic music. This just seemed to be too deep, reverbing, maybe even psychedelic but overall boring album. I'd post some track from the album but this guy is so UG that I can't find any of his recent stuff on youtube. Probably deleting this from my hard drive and last.fm library.

And yeah, apart from that and some listens through Balam Acab - Wander Wonder it's been all about Grimes this week. Her voice is just so amazing and the album has very different feeling songs in it.
This Balam Acab album is pretty interesting. Lots of natural sounds, piano but still the occasional dark bass. I think the album cover is supposed to be a crack in some cavern type of place, which is perfect for this album. Dark, natural, but not really scary.

I think I'm going to start adding ratings just based on my own opinion to keep a track of 2012 releases especially and what's good etc. Maybe someone might check out some releases if I think they're great. :donno:

Boys Noize - Adonis Remixes EP was a huge disappointment. The track itself was released back in 2011, didn't like it back then and still don't. Had high hopes for the Djedjotronic remix but it fell flat aswell. I have the same problem here as I did with Handbraeks (and a lot of other electro, not just Boys Noize related): great build up, but where's the fucking drop? It's like going up in a roller coaster only to go horizontally at the top.

3.5/10

Boys Noize - Adonis (Djedjotronic Remix)

A Place To Bury Strangers - Onwards To The Wall EP is pretty much what I expected. Noisy, loud as fuck but still pretty decent. Maybe I haven't listened to Exploding Head in a while but seems like this EP has even more weird random background noises compared to their latest. Also I don't think their latest LP had any songs with a female vocalist, here's one from the EP.

7.0/10

Back to Grimes, so addicted to this cuteness.

Grimes - Genesis

Apparently she's signed to 4AD records, pretty cool.

Well that was pretty cool.

Also, I've always complained how terrible Finland is music-wise but a lot of interesting gigs this year. Still nothing special regarding electronic music frontier but definitely good artists coming here. Problem is they're all in Helsinki so I can go to like maybe one of these. Considering the Earth + Mount Eerie since I'd get two bands worth seeing with one trip but donno, kinda wanting to see some electronic stuff. I know I sound like a bitch.

Winter/spring:

M83 (sold out immediately, no chance at getting tix)
Mos Def
Zola Jesus
Russian Circles
Pelican
Earth + Mount Eerie + some weird Canadian band
of Montreal, don't really care for their latest

Summer festivals:

M83 + Justice, not really worth it since I'd have to deal with Finnish festival life just to see those. Plus Justice's new LP was the biggest let down of 2011 for me. I'd be buying my tickets if it was 2010 or something.

Flow Festival which has always had retardedly good lineups, the one and only Finnish hipster/indie/electronic/whatever festival. Too bad I'm in the army when it's held.

Also the A-Trak mixtape I mentioned earlier was very solid. I could even get past the fact it had Beyoncé in it, although it was a remix.

There's a fine line between ridiculous and awesome but I think this is too far on the ridiculous side to be enjoyable.
