Members makes it much better; as you level up you will find out your preferences.
You can stay in lumby a while but I recommend hotspotting a bit around Varrock (north of Lumby ofc). Once you can fight the level 21 guards it helps a bit for combat (total level). Also the oaks are next to a bank there. I didn't actually enjoy RS until I got members on a whim because Spencer and Gary said it was much better. As you level, your options increase, so the variety and fun you have improves. Most of the game and the fun resides in membership, but having non-members is a great idea for awhile to understand the basics.

I would say to avoid "maxing" anything but for now to dodge what you don't like. Some skills get much better (or worse) later. I hate mining but shooting stars (members btw) makes it much better; I hated fishing at first but then I started to enjoy it once I could fish for trout + salmon; hunting was terrible for me until I could do swamp lizards; etc.. Runecrafting is boring but it may turn out to be an okay soucre of gold once you can get multiple air runes. If anything, stick to slayer and build your combats. They are more fun than other skills + if you do get members later you will be thankful you got combats up a bit.

I think the quarter a day to play RS is going to be much cheaper than the cost of most games/consoles verses time played on them.

i asked the same questions you did. because the game is so vast you need to pick something to do, go do it, then do something else. you will find nearly everything needs something else, so maybe start with combat, which ofc you will need food, so catch/kill some food, but ofc you need a fire to cook the food, so cut down tree to start the fire to cook your food to heal yourself during combat.
