With regards to brief beer related conversation last evening...

Arrogant bastard = good
Oaked arrogant bastard = better
Double Bastard = more gooderer bestest


I use to be crazy about the oaked AB until I expanded my experience with oak aging and sampled from different breweries examples of that style. IMHO American strong ales and double or imperial IPAs don't really get the characteristics that oak can impart on a less agressive tasting beer because the high hop bitterness usually overwhelms the suttle oak complexity.

However, take vintages into consideration and nothing I said is valid.

I can't really taste a difference between the standard AB on tap and the oaked AB in a bottle, it is primarily hop-tasting like most of what Stone makes.

I have yet to try Double Bastard, but I look forward to doing so. I haven't tried many oak-aged beers otherwise
