No, you weren’t imagining things. There really was an earthquake Wednesday afternoon.

An earthquake centered in Canada was strong enough to rattle furniture across the state and was felt as far south as New York City.

There were no initial reports of any serious damage or injuries Wednesday from the 5.0 magnitude quake, which was centered about 40 miles north of Ottawa near the Ontario-Quebec border.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake happened at a depth of about 12 miles at 1:41 p.m. It lasted about 30 seconds.

Gail Wiseman, of Corning, said her table and chairs began shaking. Her first thought was it was caused by a train passing by her house on Princeton Avenue Extension.

Joe Beckett said the earthquake rocked his mobile home along Victory Highway in Painted poop for between five and 10 seconds.

“Even my concrete patio, I saw it moving,” Beckett said.

Residents around the state report similar stories.
