so been doing research with this one dude, who is really awesome but his unique chemistry ideas waste a lot of graduate student time. i would go far in his group, and publish some high profile papers, but i most likely will take 6+ years. he also does a lot of biology

other dude i like is almost 70, and has 5 years left on his grant. he told me that once the grant is up he is retiring. if he would take me i would be his last grad student. i would be out in 5 years though, and doing research with him is just as good as with the other professor, i would probably get better trained in synthesis, but no training in biology.

I told the second prof that i wanted to join his group. he says he only really can take one more student, if any at all, and if he had to make a decision now he would say no. he wants me to take his class first to prove myself, and even if i ace it he says no guarentees. he will make a decision at thanksgiving

thing is i am in chemical biology, if i wanna work with the second dude i have to switch departments to chemistry. i guess ill have to wait until thanksgiving to switch departments. problem is, chemical biology does rotations in other labs the first yeah, chemistry doesnt. i guess i will have to stay in chem bio even though i dont wanna do any other rotations, stick it out, and then either quit chem bio or stay in it.

tl:dr - huge donno

because he has reactions named after him... and being his grad student pretty much insures a poop-doc at harvard or a great job, while getting done in 5 years. i can do the same things in the other group but it will be harder and most likely take longer

do what data holmes would do

i guess just figure it out as you go along. it seems to me that who you work with shouldn't have a lot of effect on how far you go in temrs of poop-grad stuff or work later. having a good mentor/teacher helps and OFC connections make a difference, but in the end doing what makes you happy is going to yield the better result. then again i quit university partly due to politics even though i was considered to be really good at what i was doing.

thing is, i think ill be happiest in the older dude's lab. thats why i wanna jump through hoops to join. its small, i like the people, and he seems to be really involved on a daily basis, unlike the first guy's group.

industry or academics are really the only 2 ways i would go. i would love to be a college prof and half my own lab and tell grad students they couldnt join my lab unless they aced my course one day... but thats pretty competitive. i could make the same money but clearly be as well respected by joining industry... probably.

im leaning away from any sort of teaching because of the ceiling on career advancement, i dont think im someone who can go to work every day knowing that i have nothing to work towards for the next xx years, and will do the same job until retiring

but teaching college level in science while having your own research lab leaves limitless achievement. the career goal is to become famous in your field as an expert, eventually getting tenure at a top 20 school

Go with the guy that's going to die sooner

maybe he'll drop dead whilst you're under his tutelage, and you can carry on his legacy
