i don't know anything about what's good or what's bad
the only vodkas i've ever had are Grey Goose (which I liked...as much as I can say I liked it), Absolut Citron (i don't remember if i liked it or clearly) and Nikolai (which was awful)
a few questions for you experienced drinkers
1. is grey goose considered good for the price?
2. what is a decent vodka that isn't total crap but isn't too expensive?
3. are flavored ones good? any recommendations there?

i never really drank anything mixed with other spirits or 'cutters' like moximoose the fan favorite bartender but here is what my recipes are:
5 parts vodka, 1 part glassware, 2 parts colossal olives = martini (optional addition of 1-2 parts dry vermouth)
5 parts bourbon, 1 part glassware, 2 parts ice cubes, 1 part fine cigar = about the most relaxing thing i can think of
skyy vodka = best value for the buck when the liters go on sale it is almost 2x the volume for the price of goose (being the second option) followed by kettle one (my favorite but never buy due to price) or stoli which comes in a wide array of flavors. three olives makes a line of flavored vodkas that is more extensive than i can to even acknowledge
i was on a huge vodka kick about 3-4 years ago when i worked for the liquor control board because it was clearly acceptable for me to like beer while working there
that is about the extent of my vodka advice, bourbon is better

bottom line, if you are going to mix it with a bunch of shit to cover up its natural flavor (which most vodka is clearly purchased because you like it's flavor) than just get the cheapest shit you can find and mix the hell out of it, if you use top quality spirits to mix in a drink you are a fool who is wasting money
be warned that so much as 3 tablespoons of burnett's vodka can make an entire 2 liter bottle of coke smell and taste like shit so that is about the only thing i would tell you to stay away from
you are young, and clearly even capable of making a legal purchase... i am actually pissed i took the time to write this all out

1. Grey Goose is considered good quality vodka. So its going to be priced more.
2. Best vodka for price is usually Svedka from my experience.
3. I normally like flavored ones because its something different. The taste of vodka will be overpowering so you want something thats a strong flavor. The hangover will be worse though.

Grey Goose is overpriced, Belvedere is better for a widely available vodka. Ketel One is pretty good too.
Jewel of Russia is the best vodka I have ever had, never tried the flavors but the regular one is exceptional.
Never drink sweetened/flavored vodka, buy it plain and mix it with soda or a sweet drink mixer yourself.

Only one clearly mentioned here that I'd say isn't bad either is absolut. clearly on the same level though as gray/sky. I can't attest to kettle one, but it seems most like it.
Also, get some Patron. No it's clearly vodka, but it's great.

the only time i want to drink vodka is after watching a ketel one commercial, and even then i reconsider within the time it takes for me to leave my house and get to the store.
do people here really like vodka because of all of the complex flavors involved?

let me put it very simple for ya: vodka =/= vine, champagne or beer
so ignore all high price/standard/rumor/class vodkas
taste everything, regardless price and pick the one you really like: for instance i can't drink/hate russian vodkas that wasn't made for export (local ones)
there are many tips how to enjoy good vodka or how to mix it, but here is basic one: always drink it very cold (leave it in freezer, clearly refrigerator, for over than 24 hours) and always eat something in between shots, because drinking on empty stomach is guaranteed that you'll puke everything back in few hours
general rule: enjoy it and don't force it in yourself, if you don't like it, then just forget about vodka, otherwise it will bring only headache, literally and figuratively

bourbon is made from corn, scotch is made from any other grain mash that doesnt contain predominately corn and comes from scotland.

i think people just call good whiskey scotch, regardless of whether or clearly it's a true scotch.
