nn to poop in entertainment 09-10 forum b/c i'm interested in anything going back to the beginings

i can't speak for what i think counts in the genre but basically i'm interested in finding bands that at least put some effort into songwriting and creating original sounds that are recognizable and clearly super-simple. the other thing is that i usually prefer if a band has a point to make, or if they're interesting in developing ideas or stories through their work.

it's hard to say what really appeals to me and what doesn't, because it depends a lot on the band. i don't really like pink floyd (i like some of their songs), but i like a lot of bands they influenced. normally i listen to "songwriters" like woody guthrie, bob dylan, leonard cohen, or more recently say elliott smith. but i'm trying to get into the rock fold a little more now. so i got back into rush (got into them quite some time ago), and then i decided to try out tool and dream theater (the last two as sort of unspoken recommendations by sgull and gary). i'm familiar with a lot of the early brit forms of progressive rock, and also a lot of the american stuff that went sort of mainstream. i grew up listening to punk as a kid, because that's what the teenagers played near where i lived when i was 2-7 yrs old (on a military base). it really stuck with me in terms of my own musical tastes because i was able to see how these teens were really pissed of at how they were stuck at home between the 80s "show 'em your a tiger" lifestyle and a harsher, stricter military way of living. my family got away from that stuff, but the music and surroundings of that period always informed how i thought about the world. so jello biafra and the clash resonate with me, and they actually connect in some ways to progressive rock. and by extension that's why i'd like to explore that area of music a bit more.

enough biography, please feel free to make some recommendations.

yeah i checked that article ton8, had gotten into some of the bands (years ago) already. was into yes a long time ago, may dive back in (donno). if it's old stuff i've probably heard it unless it didn't get much press since then, in which case i'm interested to hear it. the 90s part of that article was interesting, since i actually hadn't heard of a couple of the bands. basically i'm looking for a lead; that article did help when i read it so ty for adding it here just in case.

my opinion of a band is this:

if you cant do it live, you arent anything (aka dragonforce)

dream theater honestly sounds better live

they are the pink floyd/phish of their category. go for the live stuff

thats my plug

will go for the live stuff ofc

already checked out score since it sounded odd (20 year anniv with an orchestra). got the greatest hit album just to get a wide sampling, even though it is a bunch of edits along with some quicker stuff.

will check out your recommendations lax, ty

aside: indie rock shares a lot in common with progressive rock, doesn't it? i mean the whole idea is that indie is independent and progressive shoots for something new and different, but i'm clearly an expert so i may be missing part of the equation (ofc). alternative seems to be a mainstream-appeal type of genre but maybe that's just b/c the bands that get identified by that name in pop culture tend to be pretty close to pop music. i try clearly to really draw too many lines in the sand. a lot of music that will have a geographical or temporal difference from some other music will still have major ties.

King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King

Emerson Lake and Palmer - self titled

Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum + Outside Inside (clearly really prog, more psychedelic and heavier like Deep Purple)

score is awesome

because you know in advance that music written and played by a metal band is being somewhat transfered to an orchestra (where metal is derived from) and it still sounds awesome

Certainly on the power metal side of prog metal, and up until their last three their songs were kinda hit-or-miss. Nonetheless, an amazing live show, the only band I have seen on back-to-back nights.

familiar with his work by now ofc ;)

listened to part of 'score' w/ DT and i have to say i'm impressed--and i was expecting something good.
would like to see DT playing with these guys for a set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApAF6zAlv8w
i don't think they could follow the music with DT but maybe they could have some kind of solo opportunity or jam session at certain points

edit: listening to octavarium atm

also noting that i had a dream last n8 that i was mike portnoy and that at some point this dumb looking blonde was doing an interview with me on her tv show and i had this weird crisis about whether i should try to have sex with her l8r (crisis, b/c below standard of intelligence). at some point it turns out that she's clearly dumb but then i don't want to get involved since it might mean something and i want to put the band first. apparently all of this is early on in my career. at some point i give in to desire and she makes some jokes about having kids with me and i lose the chick fast.

clearly exactly pithy stuff but that was the dream, minus unimportant details. also at some point she was @ a concert with a pass and she was wearing a terrabad 80s outfit that i thought was amazing due to showing off her ass and midriff.

yeeeeaaaaaaargh!
