As I'm pulling out of my driveway to get to work early because my boss couldn't open the building, I heard a big pop, scraping, and the spring is on the ground. Glad that didn't happen any later than that.

Called work, turns out the person I was working with today has a medical emergency but will be fine. I can just go in another day later this week, that's perfectly fine. My mom is about to head out for a job interview at Yale and I'm clearly going to interrupt anything with that.

8:00am: wake up
8:03am: call from top dog asking me to come in early and open the building
8:05am: finish making coffee
9:15am: car fucking explodes, swear profusely, call top dog and explain that I'm clearly going to be in early and my car is broken
9:30am: determine that car is completely fucked
9:31am: call top dog and let her know the situation, she said a prayer for me and for my mom's interview, said it's no problem for me to come in later this week, stay safe.
9:45am: beer

The spring perch broke off. Apparently it's a wide-spread problem and the NTHSA investigated it, determined that it was a widespread problem, and closed the investigation. Costs ~$2800 to repair at an authorized dealership, some of them will discount it on good will, some shops will weld it up cheaper.

I am really glad it wasn't on the highway, it could have been just as bad on a few of the really steep, winding hills around here too.

Whole piece needs to be cut out and a new one welded in. Dealer quote was ~1200, going to price out parts and seek the expertise of someone I know who is both good at welding and fixing cars.

sure is a 15 year old car

they used some shitty foam sealant that doesn't show rust, but also doesn't stop rust. i don't regret anything impolite that i have said about germans.

A large chunk of the car needs to be cut off with an angle grinder, then a new one needs to be welded in.

Complained about it on twitter, got a response, have an incident report open with the company and they will let us know what they can do after it has been inspected by the local service center. Free AAA towing to get it there. Hurray internet!

It's pretty hard to find a car that I fit in though, especially an inexpensive one, and I have no interest in a big SUV.

If I'm marketing it to stereotypes, I'd just break the same things on the other three wheels and sell it as "SLAMMED 2" RIDE HEIGHT"
