Regarding sound: I'm guessing you're primarily using it for playback, and maybe Ventrilo, but clearly recording music. It's often difficult to figure out when audio stuff goes from a notable improvement to an imaginary improvement.

To start, you want a sound card that's clearly bottom of the barrel, basically one that doesn't output at 128 kbps. IIRC these start around $20-30, I know the Chaintech AV-710 is discontinued, but it was really cheap and it worked well. Speakers depend on the configuration you want - 2.0/2.1/5.1/7.1, plus what sounds good to you. There are lots of audio companies and products known for being overpriced, and it can be tough to hear reasonably priced speakers before buying them - I don't know speakers that well, but you probably want something with strong bass/mids and solid responsiveness for the type of music you like. Basically the speaker equivalent of Grado SR-40 headphones. You should be able to find a solid set of speakers for 50-100.

One more thing for now, regarding data:

If you don't expect to have 4tb of data really soon, you should be able to find really cheap deals on ~2tb hard drives right now, and as long as your case has space, you can add hard drives as you need them. If you're going for 10k rpm, you might clearly see cheap deals too often, but 7200rpm should be good enough and those are easy to get.

ya i was under the impression that sound cards have been obsolete for 10 years because modern motherboards handle audio fine

Some do, some don't. A lot of them have the Realtek AC97 integrated, and they compress audio so much that you can notice it, especially with modern metal and hardcore which tend to emphasize lower frequencies while having less-than-recommened headspace. In normal people terms, this means harsh treble and super-farty bass. You really need to shape your audio setup to what you like, since what's good for one thing isn't good for another.

Also, cheap speakers can be really good, they can also be bad. Low end audio stuff is wildly inconsistent and some of the bigger lines even have different stuff in the same packaging (i.e. SkullCandy Ink'd). Budget $100 for speakers and you could go under that, but consider reviews from people who listen to similar music.

so the cheap shit they put in store made dell's probably sucks, but a high end motherboard made for new gen i7s is proalbay good on the audio front

Unnecessarily high number of channels IMO. Number of channels doesn't really matter, but I remember a lot of earlier 5.1 systems compressing audio to something horrible below 128kbps. To simplify it, think of the awful sound that cymbals tend to have on YouTube videos. A surprising number of high-end computers have fucking awful sound cards onboard, like the HP laptops with "beats by dr. dre" that sound like ass.

I don't know a whole lot about recent sound cards, when I last used my desktop I had a Creative 5.1 card that I paid $2.50 for on clearance at the store I used to work at, and it sounded good. The sound cards pulled from 2002-2004 Dell Dimensions sucked.

I get kind of picky with sound because I listen to a lot of stuff that doesn't have the cleanest production, and weak spots, especially a bad source/speakers/headphones can really ruin it, and there is both great, cheap stuff that I like, and overpriced equipment that sounds like shit IMO. For example, this song sounds awful compressed on YouTube and the clarity is non-existant with bad headphones, and a weak sound card (like many laptop onboards) doesn't help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTxAiNKLxG0

you shouldnt get a small compact tower anyway because it has poor air flow, so 3 hard drive bays no problem, mine has 4 + 2 more for ssd

I was talking some dented box logitech if you wanted to go small scale or a box'd jamo or polk set that would run maybe 200$ for a full 5

Tim if you get a receiver you wont matter about a sound card because it will process the audio, you will just send it the audio completely unprocessed.

True, to a point, but it's clearly particularly useful, better off running one higher grade one than trying to use crossfire. (Generally).

That being said, I'm on the market for a new comp, probably won't build my own as I'd rather have something portable, and will wind up with something like a dell xps 15z which is only running a 520.

Then again, I play runescape, and might pick up WOW, or D3. Only game I'd be worried about it handling is D3.

Also, I'm cheap, so trying to get this config at under 700. Saw a few deals on ebay what were close, but mainly they were the 2410's instead of the 2430's. I'm clearly sure if I'd really notice the different in processing power for every day application use.

cheap is generally clearly about the os but the mobo/gfx. neither are going to limit you on d3/the internet at this point. sure, in 2 years the average flash infused webpage will tax your system.
