Yeah, it's been around for quite a while. It's interesting, but groups some stuff poorly.

"Brutal death metal is a subgenre of death metal which emphasizes complex and fast drumming."

Cannibal Corpse are listed there :donno:

"Death metal" lists a handful of Florida death metal bands, but Cannibal Corpse are under "Brutal death metal" despite being similar. "Swedish death metal" mixes early Swedeath, the definitive bands of melodic death metal, and new Meshuggah (wtf?) :donno:

Sarcofago are listed under "South American death metal" but the sample there isn't from one of the albums when they were death metal.

Black metal stopped existing after the second wave except for a handful of bands that nobody cares about. "US black metal" lists bands that don't sound like each other.

Black/Death has half a dozen distinct genres lumped together but Oriental metal, Celtic metal, medieval metal, and folk metal all get their own markers on the map. Where's "pirate metal"?

even if this map isn't entirely accurate, it might introduce me to more metal bands that are similar to what i like. i haven't heard of most of the death metal section... and none of my friends like metal AT ALL so i'm on my own

I don't like the categorization because it creates a lot of vague/non-descriptive niches like the subgenres of folk metal while glossing over the larger differences - that "folk metal" is really a wide variety of folk musics mixed into completely different styles of metal (often heavy, power, black, or death). Other very similar bands are separated across several genres, such as Florida death metal - all of the examples of "death metal" are very similar to "deathrash" as well as Cannibal Corpse (under "brutal death metal").

Basically, lots of unnecessary labels on bands that can easily confuse people who want to hear bands that sound like other bands they like.
