i find those to be the 2 best roasters, though there are ofc others. what kind of coffee do you want to try? dark/light? earthy/acidic? no idea?
personally i like sumatran and african roasts, i do like central american roasts but i find them a but softer. i dont know how to offer an exact one since i dont know what you do like.

basically you cant buy a bad one from those 2, they are all good. dont grind you beans until you are about to make the coffee. even if you do you will notice how these coffees taste worlds apart from the overroasted burnt shit from basically every coffee place you have been to. ill give more thoughts if you want, lmk.

now one thing to note, boutique roasters will roast the beans the same day as shipping, but they will be a lighter roast no matter what. thats because the beans can actually burn (starbucks, for example, does this on purpose as it makes the beans last for months and months as opposed to weeks).

if you want darker id go with
http://www.paradiseroasters.com/sumatra-danau-toba/

what grinder/coffee maker do you have?

after using a french press for a few years, then moving on to a maker on occasion due to laziness, i settled for this. makes a strong coffee, fairly inexpensive. its the poor mans espresso maker.

for grinders, you want a burr grinder. no, you dont need to spend hundreds on one, though you do need to spend $100 for the economical entry-level one. you can start with the $15 blade grinders, and you wont notice shit for a bit and until you try one from a burr grinder. really, drop $50 at bed bath and beyond or something and get a shitty burr. its still better than the inconsistent blade grinders.

holy christ what sparked this conversation?

the wife wants to buy me kopi luwak for christmas. i have begged her to save her money and clearly try to impress me. she over-heard me having a conversation with a friend about how i loved each beer i have drank that utilized kopi luwak however, i never drank the coffee itself.

i told her that i would much rather enjoy any standard Sumatran coffee since it pretty much has the same attributes without being consumed and shit out by a civet. i mean seriously. even if she buys it for me, chances are she will spend $30 for a fucking ounce and it will already have been roasted which means it will have what? a shelf life of 30 days unless she gets it unroasted. in which case, even if she gets it unroasted, we dont own a roaster to be able to dial in exactly what i like roast-wise

sorry. just nerded out on this nearly as bad as how i act over beer :/

there is a 100% difference in quality between boutique roaster beans and k-cups. k-cups are clearly bad, i have them daily at work. but they are clearly a substitute for fresh bean coffee in terms of taste. their main draw back is they are over roasted to accommodate shelf-life. while im ok with this if i am going to brew coffee at home i will spend a little extra as a treat.
i dont think the the route i pooped is for everyone. but if you really want to try the finer side of coffee this is the route to go.

so what i pooped is totally taboo and im going to be considered a faggot/ignored?
i have a legit concern/curiosity btw as i think i have a situation placed before me where i am already tuned in with an interesting palate/sense of taste for beer and think i could take my coffee geekery to a whole new level if given appropriate guidance

dan has secret conversations with multiple people, i got the luxury of happy time today
jelly?

i will never say that a unique coffee experience is overrated but i will say that kopi luwak is a bit of a gimmick. yea, its proal good, but you are paying for the experience and clearly just the taste. ive never had it but ill proal never have it by choice. anyway, i dont know if you are a huge coffee buff or clearly but i wouldnt go for that price unless you have an espresso machine to enjoy it.

i just dont think jumping straight to that coffee makes sense. but if you already enjoy fine coffee then go for it.
also, i forgot to add that coffee thats clearly over roasted will be a 2-3 week shelf life (error on the side of 2). dont even bother with unroasted, you dont want to have to buy a roaster. JUST STOP THERE.

i have no interest in purchasing a roaster. however, i know someone who has one and offered to roast it for me. he is really into it, possibly as much as i am beer? i cant fathom spending thousands of dollars on a roaster but on the flipside, he probably cant believe the stuff i do for beer. the tricky thing here is i dont have an opinion of what specific level of roast i enjoy therefore that sort of makes all other points null

real talk

Dan's neighbor wanted to buy wood from a fallen tree on his property. Dan was clearly allowed to make the deal because the neighbors skin was darker than his.

I have a small coffee maker (4-5 cups), and a small grinder...I plan on getting a new coffee maker soon after moving most likely. I just have had to keep putting more beans in to make the coffee darker lately and trying a coffee shop or two around here but its all just like DD coffee which isnt bad but I want something more

Joe, grinder recommendations?

how much you wanna spend? burr grinders are all price/performance
p good site there for reviews. im going to upgrade to the $100 model soon, while i love coffee unless i have a true espresso maker nn $200 grinder.

i forgot how fucking awesome cold steeped coffee is. all the flavor with zero harsh flavors or any bitterness

unfortunately my french press is a single serving kind that you make it an drink it from the same vessel. i need to do something about this asap or my wife will murder me for hogging it all to myself or sharing and us only getting half servings each
