ultimate tin foil conspiritard theory;

cia needs to divert attention from torture scandal, hacks sony, releases tons of inside info, including conspiracy with microsoft and others about pressuring google to go along with their anti-piracy platform, blames it on NK

cia torture no longer leading news.

watched it

wasn't a waste of time but it's the typical comedic shit you expect out of Rogen/Franco.

i thought it would have been a lot worse, being a seth rogen movie and all
maybe i'm just a huge faggot but i think it's kind of irresponsible to make a stereotype-confirming movie about a country whose image is already pretty much forged by the western biased media
some might even call it propaganda and i'm sure there are some tinfoil hat theorists already explaining how the hacking was intended to raise awareness about a seemingly normal comedy that actually tries to drive in a propaganda message

while your criticism is sensible, Americans value freedom of speech and the right to create "offensive" movies and jokes over just about anything else

Regardless, Americans are already virulently anti-North Korea. If anything, this film softened people's perception on the nation. I doubt any people left the film with a worse opinion of north korea than they had going in

i saw a great post on reddit about how this film just further reinforces our cartoon villain perception of dprk and the great leader, and how that actually works in their favor because it makes our general public apathetic to entice our politicians to actually do something (or rather try, we all know china is the only reason nk exists at this point in time).

really good points, my fear is just that the movie shapes the discussion about nk in any way, kinda like those stupid jeff dunham catch phrases circulated and started living a life of their own separated from the original comedy context

i can't help but think of a scenario where north-koreans would have made a similar movie about obama and what kind of a shitstorm it would raise

but yeah i hope that the movie actually softened the perception and possibly released some tension between the cultures

i dont think its tension between cultures (i mean south korea is our m8, and we import their kpop and other culture to some degree as it is). its that dprk is legitimately one of the worst countries in the world, everyone knows that the power structure is one that only favors the elite, everyone else is a peasant/slave. and the only main reasons china supports them is 1) its a buffer zone to democracy, and 2) if dprk outright fell there would be a serious refugee crisis that neither china nor south korea is equipped to handle. and with dprk being able to do some serious damage to seoul if invaded, its a tricky situation. realistically china needs to force them to slowly change their ways so they dont have a mass exodus of people into countries that could do nothing but put them in camps.

and how do you suggest china could do that in a somewhat safe way? legitimately curious since i don't know that much about their current relationships

dprk can only exist through chinese http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China%E2%80%9...relations#Trade
in short, 50% of all their economic activity is china. much of it is subsidy to they dont collapse.

http://www.cfr.org/china/china-north-korea...tionship/p11097
good analysis.

as for how to do that, i have no idea. i would imagine china flexes its financial aid muscles and forces them to start to institute a change in structure. the more china is tied to the US and to south korea, the less it wants with a rowdy nephew that threatens nuclear war whenever someone calls him short and weak.

I enjoyed the movie, but I never expected it to be an Oscar nominee.
