You know, as friends.
Is it worth tacking that on to an invite to my schools date dance even though my long term intentions are not that? I don't want to make it seem too formal and risk scaring her away.
Thanks internets.

Imo, friends will ruin a relationship faster than one spouce cheating on the other.
As friends, you will unintionally make her sad, espically if she wanted more.
I'd ask around, maybe even directly ask her how far she (or he) wants it to go.

just ask her to go to the dance, do not ask her to go as friends or to go as anything more then friends.
just simply as her to go, if she says yes then she at least likes u enough to go on a date.
and if things go well, talk to her 2 days after and ask her on a dinner/movie date.
