I have achieved both science and domination victories at this point.

Latest game wanted a culture vic.

I find old faithful, found a city near it but one square off from it being in my 2nd city.

City-State expands to get it first.

So I spend 1000 years attacking them until I get it.

Mongolia then says hey, let's attack the Turks. I do most of the fighting, Turks give me 3 cities to bugger off.

Then Greece, Russia, Mongolia, and India all tell me to fuck off and go to war with me. Germany just keeps insulting me.

I keep taking cities and expanding because the assholes won't make peace.

Finally Russia and Greece are like "my bad".

Mongolia continues to be but raped, and Ghandi, after spending every unit it had to invade a shitty state I almost wished they would take, gives up too once I connect my nation to it.

Yeah, no culture vic coming here.

I don't know opitmal paths and the like to go yet, but at least I have the mechanics down. Not trying any super hard difficulties yet.

optimal victory type is mostly influenced by your civ, your enemies civs, map size and type, and number of opponents. not so much in-game happenings (well yes, but the in-game happenings are forseen by the game conditions once you understand them)

thats why i think multiplayer and team games are more interesting, is that its not such a clear-cut strategy that you have to play by, and its more about adapting

Looking forward to my first multi player adventures with m8s. Hopefull you guys choose "bitch difficulty" so I'm not buttrapes into obselecence by 800 bc

Same game, Ghandi Russia and Germany ally up and declare war on me in 1997. In process of building all spaceship parts for sci vic if I can't pull this off.

At this point also trying to maybe get a un vic, 7 city states are with me.

Chaos ensues, Ghandi nukes me 3 times. Thanks to city states I have all these toys to play with and go stomp Ghandi's ass. I keep taking cities then seeing if he wants to negotiate peace. Ofc he just talks trash and keeps asking me if I am here to beg for mercy.

uh wut?

Germany gets bored and drops out of the fight. Russia has 2 cities left, it's 2016, spaceship is all built but one part, (leaving it just outside of city in case I decide to finish sci vi).Russia keeps sending horsemen after my cities. Hilarity ensues.

and spaceship parts can be destroyed by nukes, so keeping it right outside your capital is not the best idea, although it doesnt really matter since the game is "over" anyway

5 or something? Yeah I know I prey on the weak.

Wound up with a UN vic after using Germany as a punching bag.

Also wtf mongolia. I liberate you and you stay hostile the rest of the game.

AI is kinda retarded.

I left Ghandi with one city, Germany still had a lot of them by the time UN kicked in, so I played an extra turn or two just because I hate those god damned krauts.

Oh wait.

you really need to master the use of defensive terrain and military tactics to beat AI's, because they basically have the production where they can build all the buildings and wonders as you can, but also be constantly producing military units

I thought I did a manageable job, but yeah was outnumbered 4 to 1 in units. Usually they'll throw 6-10 ish units, which a city garisoned with ranged unit and 1-2 melee outside normally holds against. This time they had like 12 initial, killed off 6 pretty easy but additional waves came in and kept coming. My fault really. No one was paying attention to me, Mongolia kept asking me to go to war, kept saying no, then as soon as i finally said yes roflstomped by everyone else but mongolia.

yes though, gotta keep working at it though. I usually try and take the rough terrain bonuses first then mid battle use heals to keep my units around and even things.

Great Artist 0 0 n/a Is now the only GP that can trigger Golden Ages; loses Culture Bomb
Great Scientist 0 0 n/a The ability to Discover Tech is now limited to 6 turns' worth of your Science output, instead of awarding a whole technology automatically.
Great General 0 0 n/a Now gives +15% combat bonus to nearby units, down from +25%, but the Citadel now has Culture Bomb properties

they had to give something to the general, since they cant start golden ages any more, which was not really balanced in the first place

and the only reason the citadel was stupid before was the fact that you could start a golden age instead

its not bad, since if you are making an academy at your capital you probably have a lot of science-boosting building modifiers

Messing around on a prince game, got completely demolished. For some reason everyone went to war with me almost from the jump.

Was mad gay. I think sometimes you just get RNG'ed. I was able to fend them off and keep expanding until 1600's. Then was just completely outnumbered.

I could have made peace with Egypt (they wanted to make peace but at this point was pissed off by always being at war and wanted to make an example of them), Russia, Hiowatha, and dem arabs were all on a unified front on the other side of my kingdom. Since everyone was going to war with me I didn't have any research agreements to help with my tech, and was severely hampered as a result.

dont force expanding just to expand, if theres no prime positions for a city, defend what you have first

were you being super aggressive attacking civs or citystates or expanding too broadly?

Prolly expanding too broadly. There was some prime real estate and I wanted it for myself.

ran into a few games where was hammpered tech wise due to not being able to get ahold of resources from having a smaller kingdom, was tying to avoid that.

its pretty common to be screwed out of strategic resources, you may have to trade for them / focus on units that dont take them

Nothing is better than having someone go to war, send all their peeps, have them killed off, then bribe you not to retaliate.

Also - how dumb am I that I didn't learn until like two days ago you can put extra gold to use and just buy units/buildings when you have the chance?

Also Montezuma sucks.

Fuck this game.

Seriously the last 5 times I started a random game I got swarmed by Barbarians. Not losing Cities but spending the entire time fending them off keeps on putting me about 2,000 years behind everyone else.

so i did this huge earth map all wrong. no matter how hard you try you cant compete with the civs that have 20 cities. they out everything you. must go wide, then tall with capital but still constantly pushing wider. fun, but it really seems like the game changed to really favor a civ with more cities.

so i did this huge earth map all wrong.  no matter how hard you try you cant compete with the civs that have 20 cities.  they out everything you.  must go wide, then tall with capital but still constantly pushing wider.  fun, but it really seems like the game changed to really favor a civ with more cities.

you have to exploit your terrain, donno how easy it is in some places, but the mountains are easy

which has nothing to do with current said game :donno:
its just a statement about how you are forced to go for a wide civ because a tall civ can not compete with a cit with 20 cities. impossible.

Yeah, don't have the expac but every game it boils down to needing to expand, and at some point smashing almost every other civ to keep them down.

Supposedly small civs are for culture, but that never happens.

Songhai and Japan decided to summarily raze or capture the same north cities of mine for the entire game (taking turns doing so, great neighbors).

No where else to expand, whelp fuck this game. Finally decided I was going to chuck my laptop or quit the game. Quit in the 1500's. I had spent almost all of my time just making units to defend my territory. No iron, was a good time.

this game has 24 city states (i think), and greece is fucking ridiculous. their collective bonus is huge.

have not played against them yet
but the huge earth map, max civs, and slowest/slower game pace is a fun scenario to play. i mistakenly didnt do my early social policies correct, and didnt hyper expand.
