the gist is i dont accept a dude who strikes out 150+ times and hits under .250 as anything above average.  50 years ago he would not have stayed in the league, or would be a platoon guy.

and you keep talking about production numbers.  because hes not getting very many hits his production comes in bunches.  its not a steady stream.  so that only leads to less frequent but more decisive leads.  your fancy stat does not equal wins.

Just because you do not "accept" the type of player he is does not mean he does not have value or give his team production.

Every baseball player is streaky with their hits, to otherwise would be ignorant as baseball is a game of streaks. Also you can look at his monthly splits and see there is little variation in his stats month to month disputing your inconsistent argument.

im not saying hes a terrible hitter. im saying in no other era but ours would a guy who strikes out 26% of the time, who only puts the ball into play 50% of the time (league average is 70%) be playing as a starter. its a testament of our era.

his best stat though is 18.5% of his flyballs are homeruns. league average is 8%.

if he ever tried to be a complete hitter id probably like him.

he consistently hits a homerun every 4 games, and gets a hit every other game. i never said hes inconsistent. i said his production comes in bunches. and 50% of the time he does not even make contact. he just happens to be a strange freak of a hitter. his value is not equal to making 12 mil a year though, thats for sure. take him out of the juice ball/roid era and i guarantee you his numbers are pedestrian.

Sard had said he was but I will still disagree that he would have. George Foster had many seasons exactly like Dunn and he played 18 seasons, also see Harmon Killebrew for a similar player from past generations to have long successful major league career.

according to your war stat killabrew had 5.0+ for years and years, and his so totals are far less, though high for his era (they really are similar, but killer was still a better hitter, he put the ball into play 67% of the time, nearly todays average). point being we have come to accept huge strikeout numbers. players then were embarrassed. they wanted to be a better hitter, not a better slugger.

i wont comment on foster because hes another guy who made big bucks to do amazing things once every 5 games and be a fly on the wall for the other 4.

a guy who hits .240 and strikes out 150+ a year is not a quality player imo

And the beloved WAR stat that Bubbachunk wants to harp on agrees with you, he's just ignoring that point.

You misread the stats as he has only had 2 sub 1 WAR years and now that he is playing 1B, a much better position for him, the numbers should not drop until he is near retirement.

You missread the stats as is states 2.0 and higher is "starter" material.

His WAR has been under 2.0 3 out of the last 5 years. And is only 2.2 this year.

In addition, 100 runs/100 rbi for someone who is jacking it out 40+ times a year is not really good production. He should be in the 110-120 range at least each and every year, but he's not, because he's too busy either walking or striking out with men on base, instead of putting it into play.

WAR: 8+ MVP, 5+ A-S, 2+ Starter, 0-2 Reserve, < 0 Replacement

Dunns last several years.

2010: 2.2
2009: 0.9
2008: 2.1 (sorry, I suppose you add the .4 up with the 1.7, so he barely makes the "starter" cut here). TBH being that close puts it in both camps imho.
2007: 3.0
2006: 0.6

I honestly don't see how he can be warranting such discussion.

LOL

I cant believe you just stated it is a bad thing to walk with men on base. I cannot argue with such logic, good day sir.

Well yes, when you're supposed to be DRIVING IN RUNS, walking does nothing except put the onus on the next guy in the order.

You cannot argue with me because I just pointed out your were completely wrong about WAR, which is what you've been championing as the end all, be all stat to prove a guy who averages 40 more strikeouts a year than hits is decent.

you dont want your slugger always walking with runners in scoring position. he does noT get paid 12 mil to take a walk. i know you know this but will not concede it. i really tried to not even get in this debate as weve done this at least 2 other times that i can recall.

The point is to get on base and not get out. The way you two are bringing your argument is that even if the pitcher is giving you pure crap to hit you should not take the walk but swing anyway. Not everybody is Vlad.

So you refuse to admit you were wrong about the WAR numbers?

Sard last time I will try to say this, Dunn should not have been playing LF and that brought down his WAR prior to this season. Over his career he is a 2.5 WAR player which is good, not great. This season finally playing where he should (1B) he already has put up a WAR of 2.2, so if he ends up keeping up with his production he will be a 4.4 WAR player which is more than just good.
