but if you insist...i drive a 95 cutlass it started over heating last night, the heat no longer works, and the temp gauge floats a lot and fast...but the top of the engine is smoking...i just idled it to 250degrees in my driveway, and if i sit there and hold the gas down slightly the temp drops way low and the heat works until i let off the gas, and the radiator fans never kick on, any idea of what is causing this? coolant is all full, only thing i can think of is the thermostat

Agreed.... when its cold, pull the radiator cap and watch your fluid levels, if they never drop or raise, your not cycling coolant properly...

first thing i would do is a pressure to test to check for coolant leaks, if none found proceed to next:
alot of older olds cars have this problem with blockage of cheap coolant in the intake manifold that helps it cool, this is the most exspensive and likely problem,
lastly.. you would need to check the fan side wiring harness to make sure it was still getting power(voltage reader), if it was and still no fans then it's the fan switch gone bad

my truck makes a slight whistle when i first start it up then it goes away and sounds fine until i give it gas, then the fan belt starts to whistle louder even while idle.

what should i do?

sounds like a busted alternator ill take a look and give ya a quick estimate

damn its worse than i thought. the alternator is connected to this doohickey and long story short you're gonna have to junk this whole dang truck its just not safe to drive anymore sorry

pick up a can of belt re conditioner (don't lose me here) from local parts store
pin point which exact belt it is by spraying it WHILE THE CAR IS ON (depending on if you have a separate drive belt system) until whistling is gone
replace belt if it shows any cracks at all, good idea to replace the tensioner too, this is what you would use to loosen the tension off the belt to replace it

noise is causes by a weak, cracked, slipping, wrong belt ETC

spray bottle was used instead
noise went away
noise came back with even more intensity the following day
both the belt and tensioner was replaced and all was good

3 days later problem appears again

that would require further hands on m8
unless of course you have a wining due to the power steering pump

a lot of possibilities

thats what the local shop said
2 days later it went away for good
