Mining leveled up through all of Vanilla, it's currently at almost 90, should get it up tonight a bit more but I'm raiding right now so don't know.

just smelted everything i could would ocasionaly head out and mine for 5 skillups etc then back to smelting
if the price was right i smelted even if it was still green just for the skill ups

Smelting my way up, Timmytucker was kind enough to sell me some Thorium Ore at almost the highest price on the AH.

IIRC there are better places to mine the last few levels than Hinterlands.
