just had to explain to someone how to take something 14"x18" and lay it out on a 48" square to get the best yield...
how does one graduate hs, let alone do good in school by not knowing how to do things like this?
and asking him to divide to figure out the yield was lulz sadly

48" Square = 6" x 8" (not exactly a square but about as close as you're going to get without fractions.

14" x 18" is twice as large.

What am I missing?

48" square = 48" x 48", not 48 square inches

CODE

A square inch (plural: square inches) is a unit of area, equal to the area of a square with sides of one inch. The following symbols are used to denote square inches:

   * square in
   * sq inches, sq inch, sq in
   * inches/-2, inch/-2, in/-2
   * inches^2, inch^2, in^2
   * inches˛, inch˛, in˛

Now, I feel that we are just talking about semantics here, but you didn't say square inches. You just said a square.

And back to the original problem at hand, by "best yield", I will assume you mean multiple cuts that are 14" x 18" (as the best way with only one cut would probably be a piece on the outside, as it is the easiest to cut), should be 8 pieces.

A 48" square to be is 6" x 8" faggot.

A 48 inches square board would imply a 4' x 4' board to me.

tl;dr 8 PIECES
