What type of eggs were those? I've cut up meni salmon fillets and sold pounds of eggs very similar to those for people to reuse for fishing and never once thought about consuming them myself.

basically all russian kinds of salmons
mainlly they do this what they call red caviar from pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), keta (Oncorhynchus keta) or semga/atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
after wide consumption of red caviar in russian for centuries, it spread to rest of europe latelly too, for expl: they now sell red caviar in scandinavia made from local sorts of salmons

Well I'll be damn...that was salmon. Maybe if I take a salmon fishing trip next year I'll have someone take a pic of me eating an egg infested female raw, grizzly bear style. (Dont worry Gary, I won't steal anyone's ID)

See Vogan, by the time something reaches my mouth it is edible whether it wants to be or not. Salmon and trout are fine straight out the stream. You can't possibly get any fresher sushi than when it's still moving and heart beating.

I'm no caviar ethusiast but I was under the impression that caviar received no additions to change it's taste other than maybe minor addition of salt.
