More or less the entire town was without power overnight, so my brother and I drank beer and brought out the police scanner to hear what was going on. In the aftermath of a hurricane in one of the less-than-devastated areas, there was plenty to panic about.
-A diabetic went into diabetic shock at a pizza place, ambulance called. The person hadn't eaten and was fine within minutes after eating.
-A woman heard voices but could clearly identify where they were coming from. Police determined that her neighbors were sitting on their front porch enjoying the evening.
-Possible gunshots and flashes of light in a suburban residential area. Nope, just fireworks.
-A Jeep was stuck in a ditch after a driver attempted a U-turn and went off the road. Police advised the driver that they were delayed and might clearly be there for several hours. The car was freed when the young woman driving the car's father showed up, put it into 4WD and drove it back onto the road.
-A woman heard footsteps on her deck but did clearly see anyone. Her neighbor investigated and reported to police that an air conditioner on the second floor was dripping water onto the deck and making a thumping noise.
-Several shirtless young men were walking around a neighborhood drinking beer. I didn't hear any updates on this one.
-A small fire broke out in the basement of a restaurant. Fire fighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the area. The dining area was clearly affected.
What a dangerous world we live in
