What do you guys think about Marco Rubio? I've recently started following him and I think he's a really interesting guy. You guys don't strike me as the type of liberlols who are like "all republicans are crooks and corrupt", so I'm interested in what you think about his politics.

the cuts he wants affected the most are social security and medicare/medicade and other entitlements. he explains this by showing how they are going bankrupt anyway. when SS was first started there were 12 workers for every employee, now there are what, 2-3?

for the jobs act, hes all for payroll tax cut, full expense of acquiring capital etc etc. on the tax side of things he seemingly is straight republican, any tax is bad, we can only repeal taxes. but only for businesses.

the real problem is we have a system that treats your local small business (eg. employs a few dozen people, does 5-10 mil in sales, nets a modest profit [couple hundred k a year is clearly huge once you reinvest some of that in equipment, expansion etc]) the same as a multinational business that actively keeps profits offshore aka in the bank

lobbies lower taxes even though taxes have done nothing but drop for them over the past 60 years

the question is clearly if taxes are a burden. of course they are. its clearly that taxes are too high. of course they are. i hate paying that much in taxes. but when we effectively are paying more than a multinational corporation (which, mind you, can factor the taxes into the price of a good so we effectively pay that tax, clearly them), the system is skewed. and playing into that hand is clearly my cup of tea. i just cant ever side with that logic. i dont think dems are some "bringer of justice", and i dont subscribe to the "lesser of two evils" logic that washington wants to portray. ive voted for 3rd party throwaway votes the last 3 elections.

misleading kinda, as unemployment is very high, mostly due to these offshore "free trade" agreements that only benefit those who already have the means. ofc the programs that are mostly funded by the working class will go broke if the jobs the working class do are shipped elsewhere (while the profit is directly fed upwards).

I'm pretty sure the ratio of people paying into SS and people collecting from it is roughly 3:1. I also don't think people should rely on SS to support them 100%, I'm a firm believer in the idea that people should plan ahead for their future, save up a nest egg, continue investing, get a private pension plan (which of course, helps the employer avoid some taxes). why is it the government's job to look out for your future and say "hey, you're 15 and get paid $6.75 an hour. due to child labor laws you can only work saturday and sunday between 12pm-6pm. While you should be making $80 a week, we're gonna go ahead and put $10 a week towards some retirees. don't worry, one day you'll thank us when we give you some other little kid's money"

this is the biggest issue in politics for me because it's something i'm going to have to face when i'm middle aged. those numbers from my example were the specifics of my first legitimate job, and i probably won't thank the government one day because by the time i retire (if i ever do), SS won't exist and there will be no money to collect.

unemployment is a big part of that discrepancy, though i will certainly give you the baby boomers skewing the numbers for the next 10 years. to touch on the "reliance" aspect, we have grown up understanding clearly to rely on it. our parents did clearly, they were taught that they were paying into a fund that was their retirement. yes, the smart ones saved some themselves, but that does clearly take away from what the program was before our politicians decided to start taking the money and replacing it with iou's in the form of t-bills. social security will be there when we retire, in some form, as long as we dont let the government convince us its a lost cause. sure, retirement age should go up (we live longer, are i better health, so we work a few years longer; health care costs need to get under control).

its no secret i dont subscribe to ayn rand, atlas shrugged, or any other solely self-serving philosophy. i do absolutely believe the #1 problem is money in politics, corporate personhood, private profits and socialized losses that banks/the huge multinational corporations enjoy. and its clearly that i think all government spending is good, but i absolutely do clearly agree that the first place we need to go to recover 10 years of idiotic wars coupled with tax breaks for the filthy rich and 30 years of deregulation is the average citizen.

These programs should be reformed as they have many times before to make them effective, rather than eliminated. I completely disagree with this targeting - defense has become a huge problem because an insane amount of money goes into it and to measure effectiveness goes too deep into ideology to reason with it. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and employment initiatives should be our highest priority because they provide a direct benefit to the people.

The same programs are often considered great if they are benefiting our troops, driving industry is praised if it is via war spending - the is an ideological filter leftover after WW2, often called the conscience of a conservative, that war is great, everything except defense is bad. The support of excessive war funding is almost entirely across the board, and it has a stigma attached to it that makes it hard to get rid of regardless of how wasteful and unnecessary it is.
